  • Letter to the editor: Leslie Knight should be next circuit judge

    To the voters of the 15th Circuit, Grant, Owen and Carroll counties:
    I wish to thank all of you whole voted for me in  the May primary election for circuit judge. I am honored and grateful for your support. My family and I worked hard, and a special thanks to my daughters Klaire, Alyssa, Darcy and Lauren for walking so many miles and knocking on all those doors.

  • Letter to the editor: West points to city’s accomplishments

    I would like to announce my candidacy for re-election for mayor of the city of Owenton.
    I have done what I said I would do four years ago and more.
    We have resurfaced 21 streets. We have had 12 houses torn down, one of which had been condemned since 2005 plus one car garage and one small building.
    We have cut our regular budget by $100,000 a year plus some salaries that were too high.
    Six sections of land have been annexed into the city limits in the last 20 years that are now certified at the secretary of state.

  • Letter to the editor: Sipple will focus on family as councilman

    My name is Milford Sipple and I’m announcing my candidacy for Owenton City Council.
    I have lived most of my life in Owen County and have raised my family here. My eldest daughter Stacey Sipple Long is the director of the Owenton Senior Center. My youngest daughter, Robbyn Sipple Wainscott, is the accounts payable clerk for the Owen County Board of Education. I also have two grandchildren who attend the Owen County School System.

  • Letter to the editor: Bess will bring new energy to Owen Co. sheriff’s office

    I want to encourage people to get out and vote on Nov. 4.
    I agree with our Owen County Clerk Laurie Stivers that it is a shame we did not have a better turnout for the Sept. 16 election.
    Now that the alcohol vote is over, I agree with you in that our community needs to focus our energy on fighting the battle on drugs in our county.
    I believe one step we can take in that direction is to vote for Mark Bess for Owen County Sheriff on Nov. 2.

    Chuck Tackett is a local Scott County farmer and magistrate running for state representative for the 62nd District which includes Scott and Owen counties. Without a doubt, Chuck Tackett is the most qualified man to represent us in Frankfort.
    I have known Chuck for many years. He has always been a dear friend to my family, a leader among our farmers, and rock for the community as a whole.

  • Letter to the editor: Take a moment to remember 9-11 and thank first responders

    Our lives seem so busy in today’s world that we do not take the time to express to others, and more importantly God, our thanks for the freedoms and privileges we have as Americans.
    I invite all Owen countians to join us around the flagpole at the Owen County Courthouse for a memorial prayer remembering 9-11 and those who lost their lives on that day.
    We also need to pray a prayer of thankfulness for our first responders and the many volunteers in Owen County who daily aid those in need.

    Care to take a guess as to how many cell phones there are in Kentucky?
    According to date released by the Kentucky State Police in 2012, Kentuckians held approximately 3.2 million cell phones.
    Care to take a guess as to how many calls are placed to Kentucky 911 emergency centers per year? According to 2012 data, that number is 3.6 million.
    Yes, that number is staggering. But as we all know, dialing 911 in an emergency is the most important thing you can do.

  • Letter to the editor: Outpouring of love touches Morgan’s family

    It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter. Our lives changed forever the day we lost our dad and Papaw, Rick Morgan.
    There will always be a void where his smile used to be. As we do our best to push through every cup of  coffee without him, every meal where he is not there, every NASCAR race I can’t watch with him, every morning to daycare without him, every college football game we’ll never get to talk about, and every moment that has been taken from us. Please keep me and my family in your thoughts and prayers.

  • Letter to the editor: National charity based in Owen invites public to stop by

    The Tailgating for Troops program is well on its way to being a nationally sponsored program based right here in Owen County.
    My wife and I purchased land off of 607 back in October and fell in love with the area.  We are very happy with our decision to buy in the area and eventually move down full time.
    We moved our company headquarters to Owen County just a few short months ago due to the generosity of John Ashcraft and the support of Kim Hawkins at Ashcraft Realty. We cannot thank them enough and we are thrilled to be here.
