  • Letter to the Editor: Owenton police chief endorses Steve Miller

To the voters in the upcoming Owen County Sheriff’s Primary Election, I would like to take this opportunity to support the Republican candidate Steve Miller. I believe the number one problem facing our community is drugs and the crimes associated with it. Based upon discussions I have had with many Owen countians, I am certain the majority of you feel the same.

  • Letter to the editor: Volunteers can touch many young lives

On April 22, 2014, Girl Scouts throughout the eastern half of Kentucky honored their volunteers on Girl Scout Leader Appreciation Day during National Volunteer Week.
Our dedicated leaders give of their time on a weekly basis to plan and lead fun, educational Girl Scout troop meetings and field trips.

  • Letter to the editor: Think and pray about alcohol issue

Last week, our conscientious son-in-law was late to work for the second time in 20 years. This was because of a wreck on Interstate 24 near Nashville, Tenn.
It turned out that one lady had a flat tire on that interstate. Her 13-year-old boy was with her. He, being a Boy Scout, got out to change the tire.
A second lady came speeding past.
Unfortunately, the second lady was allegedly under thee influence. The influence drove her to run into the 13-year-old scout at the side of the road.
He died before anyone could save his life at the hospital.

  • Letter to the editor: Support the excellent staff of New Horizons

On Wednesday, April 2, 2014, I was admitted to the emergency room at New Horizons Hospital.
    What a busy place!
The ambulances come and go 24/7.
In spite of how busy they were, I received excellent care.
The doctors are outstanding and I especially appreciated Dr. Betty Mitchell and our own Dr. Christy Johnson.
My guardian angels were Nancy, Tink, Donna, Amy, Shari, Celia and others.
I got to bring Kasey home with me, and that is a blessing.

  • Letter to the editor: Threlkeld will make excellent judge for Owen

I am William Ford Threlkeld, the proud father of John Brent Threlkeld. My son is seeking to serve as our next circuit judge in the 15th judicial circuit that includes Carroll, Grant and Owen counties.
I opened my law practice in 1949 and I retired in 2010. I practiced law in front of many judges you may have known - Ward Yager, Jim Ford, Charles Satterwhite and our current judge Stephen Bates - as well as countless other state and federal judges.

I, Travis Fitzgerald, am excited to be a candidate for fourth district magistrate and I hope I can earn your vote May 20.

  • Letter to the editor: Dedication to community appreciated

I would like to thank Tammy Bishop, Charlie Ellis and Carrol Ellis for their service to help the people of Owen County who are going to doctor appointments or the hospital.
Their Christian love and kindness and prayers are awesome.
They go above and beyond to help others.
I feel so blessed and I’m very thankful to all who are involved in this service. They are always on time and Tammy always calls the night before to remind you!
May we keep them in our prayers and thoughts and may God bless you.

  • Letter to the editor: Kincaid endorses Stivers for county clerk

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Laurel Stivers for Owen County Clerk. I highly recommend Laurel as a candidate to serve as our county clerk.

  • Letter to the editor: Alcorn shares our values

I just want to start out saying that our family follows all political aspects within Owen County. We have yet, but one, candidate that has cared enough to show up and share his views and outlooks for our county.
This man is Gary Alcorn. I see how he enjoys meeting new individuals and sharing why he should be sheriff of Owen County.
There are numerous signs of different candidates that have been through my residence and I feel that unless I meet and hear their values and outlook for our county, I may just be voting for one candidate, and that is Gary Alcorn.
