• Letter to the editor: Visit a church this Sunday

One of the most exciting times during a ball game to me is when the team huddles together just before the game begins.
Many times, you will hear one of the members of the team ask a very important question: “What time Is It?”
Then the team as a group responds by saying “Game time.”
Friends, in the life of the church there is not a more appropriate question.
As believers and followers of Christ Jesus, “It’s Game Time.”

  • Letter to the editor: No one has right to damage environment

No one has the right to irresponsibly damage and destroy a stream of water. The fish, plants, and all the living creatures of the creek come together to form a beautiful ecosystem designed by the creator of all nature.
There is damage and destruction occurring at Mill Creek in Owen County. A company called Horse Shoe Bend Motor Sports is being investigated in connection with the damage.

  • Letter to the editor: Help change the lives of children

Can you imagine being at the age of 13 and just receiving your first gift ever? Hear how one simple gift changed the life of a 13 year old in Central Asia.
Timur Nesbitt was abandoned at birth and grew up in an orphanage knowing nothing of unconditional love. That changed when at 13 he received a shoe-box gift through Operation Christmas Child. Three years later, Timur was adopted by an American family from Iowa. He now attends Southern Seminary in Louisville and is excited to share how one simple shoe-box changed his life.

  • Letter to the editor: Former resident participating in art competition with $200,000 prize

I lived and grew up in Owen County for 18 years before moving away to pursue other ventures.
I am competing in Artprize 2012, an open art contest in Grand Rapids, Mich. that takes place from Sept. 19 to Oct 7. It has a  grand prize of $200,000.00 and is based off of popular vote. Voting can be  accessed and take place online.
I still have family and friends in the community, I thought this may be something of interest.

  • Letter to the editor: Voting yourself more money drastic measure?

The Owen County School Board should not raise property taxes.
Our schools will have to make due with less money like everyone else in Owen County.  The easy way out for the superintendent is to ask that taxes be raised, (Let the citizens of our community who are struggling for every dime in this Obama recession find a way to get by) rather than face what he proposes we all do – cutting our budgets.

  • Letter to the editor: Manor enhances our community

Last week as I read the News-Herald and saw the back page, I was not only shocked, but appalled. A group of lawyers from West Virginia took out a full page ad to try to get some of us Owen countians to bring charges against our Owenton Manor.

  • Letter to the editor: Do your part to protect the natural beauty of Owen County

    Another paradise lost.
There was once a beautiful stream where the beaver built their damns, where deer would drink and play, where ducks would swim the day away, all the while, the bald eagle would watch from his nest.
Now the beaver are dead, the dams are gone and the eagle has left.
Think I’m talking about some big city far away? I’m not.

  • Letter to the editor: Zone change was proper and well researched

This letter is in response to John Ashcraft’s (letter to the editor) about the zone change at 311 South Main Street.
The planning and zoning ordinance was out of date since 1992 and the comprehensive plan is supposed to be updated every five years. The planning and zoning ordinance had not been updated since it was adopted in 1965.

  • Letter to the editor: Ford property zoning change process ‘flawed’

After reading the article last week regarding the zone change for the former Ford property in town, I felt compelled to respond and clarify some of the facts surrounding the issue.  I was contacted for a quote prior to last week’s edition, but chose at that time to not make a comment as I did not want to speak emotionally and without much prior consideration.  It is not my intent to belittle any individuals or cause controversy within our community.  My intent is to simply state the truth that has been glossed over or neglected entirely.

  • Letter to the editor: Freedom demands vigilance

America! What shall we do? Our once great Christian republic is in serious trouble. Over a long period of time, the forces of the ultra-left have placed their legions into strategic positions in our government, our schools, and our churches. Their purpose was to prepare for their day of revolution when they will attempt to totally destabilize the republic of America and take it over.
