  • Letter to the editor: Community should do what is right and vote ‘no’

    When I read the “Dear Editor” letter for a child last week about selling beer and alcohol, it broke my heart. If anyone who calls themselves Christians read this letter and doesn’t vote “no,” I know they will have to answer someday for their actions. Please just vote “no.”
    If a small child pleads to vote no because of Dad yelling at Mom, throwing stuff and cussing her out because of drinking, it has to be right to vote “no.”
    If someone has it more handy to buy, you know it would be worse. Please for the sake of our children, please vote no

  • Letter to the editor: Letter reveals child’s concern over alcohol sales in Owen County

    I’m writing this editorial to share my view on the wet/dry issue. My main concern is for the children of Owen County. What is best for them? I have seen children in our county schools who live with tough situations at home. I believe that allowing stores to sell alcohol in our county will compound some of the problems these children have to deal with daily.

  • Letter to the editor: Going wet sparked Danville economy with plenty of new growth

    As a former commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Local Government, I am familiar with the Owen County’s community leadership.
    As a descendant of an Owen County family who migrated to my native Calloway County in the 1830s, I appreciate Owen County’s history.
    As president/CEO of the Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership, I understand the challenge of development in a county on the U.S. 127 corridor distant from interstate access.
    I wish to provide my perspective on Danville’s recent success in expanding alcohol sales.

  • Letter to the Editor:Bullying demands serious action

    When I was younger and there was trouble on the bus, our bus driver would either stop the bus and sit there for a while or take the kid off the bus and bust their butts. When the child got home their parents would do the same thing. I understand that is now against the law, but no serious action is being taken. Now days the bus driver puts the troubling kid up front and sometimes they will get ISD, but very rarely. Being a bus driver is hard enough, but adding the screaming, yelling, profanity and name-calling makes it a lot harder. Our bus monitors also have a hard job.

    In the primary election next week, I encourage Owen County voters to support B.D. Wilson for commissioner of agriculture. 
    I have known B.D. for over 30 years and respect him and his work in business and government. 
    As a farmer, former small-business owner, and judge-executive, B.D.’s credentials offer voters a candidate who has the experience and knowledge to do an outstanding job representing the interest of Kentucky agriculture.
    On May 17, please vote for B.D. Wilson for commissioner of agriculture.

  • Letter to the editor: Church family, friends share the love

    Nadine Goldsberry must be a wonderful human being.
    On Mother’s Day, she received five small, handpicked flower arrangements. I assume they were from her church family and friends who wanted to share their appreciation for a life well-lived.
    This kind of quiet testimony is an example of Christ-like humanity that speaks volumes of a much-loved Owen countian.

  • Letter to the editor: Thanks to Owen County from Alabama resident

    The devastating tornados that passed through Alabama April 27 caused so much destruction and left our little town of Arab was without power for days.
    We have received so much help from so many.
    I want to send a special thank you to the Owen Electric Company. Being a native Kentucky girl from Nelson County, I can’t tell how thrilled I was Sunday afternoon to see the caravan of trucks and men from Kentucky roll through our town. I was the one waving and throwing kisses.
    Thank you so much for your help. Words cannot express our gratitude for all you did.

  • Letter to the Editor: April is a time to take a stand against abuse

    Childhood is supposed to be an age of innocence, but for too many in the Commonwealth it’s a time of suffering. In 2009, a report revealed that Kentucky led the nation in the number of children who die as a result of abuse and neglect. Statistics show that every minute in Kentucky, two children are victims of abuse and neglect that can leave emotional and physical scars that last a lifetime. No doubt there are countless more cases that go unreported.

  • Letter to the Editor: Alcohol only creates problems

    People, generally, do not desire facts. We are motivated through emotion. Our strongest emotion is fear. Many Americans are afraid that one dollar will “crash,” that the price of gas will ruin us, etc. We lack wisdom.
    So what am I talking about? A healthy fear. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” God knows “the end from the beginning,” and everything between. God cares for us.
