  • Letter to the editor: Avoid heartache and just say ‘no’ to expanded sales

    On July 26, Christ followers have a chance to vote “no” to alcohol sales and protect our children and grandchildren from further heartache and family turmoil. I see this every day in my practice  —  extended family taking care of children whose homes have been torn apart by drugs and alcohol. I fought to preserve my father’s dental building, and I am fighting to preserve our way of life. Our children deserve the right to also grow up in a community without alcohol sales on every corner.

  • Letter to the editor: It's time to end prohibition in Owen County

    Here are some facts to consider:
    Trigg County, Kentucky decided to try to boost its economy and held a local-option election in the fall of 2009.
    It passed by 36 votes. They projected $1 million in sales as a result of the election, but they were wrong. It brought more than $2 million in gross sales. These figures do not include the non-alcoholic products purchased on the same visits.
    Here are some other noteworthy facts about their first full year of alcohol sales:
    Alcohol tax money received (city and county) for 2010 is nearly $130,000.

  • Letter to the editor: Owen countains already drink but who will benefit?

    On July 26, make your decision based on facts, not opinion.
    Over the last several months, I have heard that if Owen County becomes wet we will have more drunken drivers on the road and DUIs will increase; however, this has not been the case in other Kentucky counties.
    For example:
    • Danville — dry to wet DUI rate dropped by 33 percent
    • Pike County — dry to wet DUI rate dropped by 40 percent
    • Hopkins County — dry to wet DUI rate dropped by 48 percent

  • Letter to the editor: What is the true cost of going wet?

    From a financial perspective, Owen countians are committed to coughing up approximately $25,000 for the upcoming special election on July 26.
     If the county votes to go “wet,” we may need to hire an alcohol administrator — another salaried employee with benefits. This position could be handled by the county judge-executive, but it is very time-consuming and other counties have found that they eventually had to hire another person.

  • Letter to the editor: Weak people don’t need additional temptation

    I am writing this letter in response to a previous letter in the June 22 News-Herald.
    While I realize that the people, not alcohol, cause problems, I feel that when you mix alcohol and human weakness, it creates a multitude of problems.
    I came from a family of five children with an alcoholic father. As a result of this, each of the five children was raised by different families.
    While people make the choice, the choice is easier to make when you don’t have a beer joint or package liquor store down the street.

  • Letter to the editor: Going wet - is it worth it?

    The title of the letter to the editor published in last week’s paper was “Adults, not alcohol, are responsible for actions.” Very true, that is, if you are limiting the discussion to revolve around adults only. In that same edition of the newspaper, there were nine charges listed in the District Court news that involved “operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” One of those nine charges was against an underage person.

  • Letter to the editor: Family history forever linked to Owen County

    I’m a granddaughter of Grace Natalie Spiers Newton. A few years ago in the Calistoga, Napa County, Calif., museum, I found an area dedicated to the Spiers of Kentucky. This perked my interest in my grandmother Grace, who passed away when I was 2. My search took us from Placerville, El Dorado County in California to Monterey.
    I had a book written by Mrs. Margaret Murphy so I called someone with the Owen County History Museum who graciously put me in contact with Margaret, who turned out to be my fourth cousin.

    Alcohol has never beaten a person or abused a child. The people who abuse alcohol have.
    It’s not Alcohol Anonymous, it’s Alcoholics Anonymous.
    It’s not Mothers Against Distilleries and Breweries, it’s Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.

  • Letter to the editor: Community should do what is right and vote ‘no’

    When I read the “Dear Editor” letter for a child last week about selling beer and alcohol, it broke my heart. If anyone who calls themselves Christians read this letter and doesn’t vote “no,” I know they will have to answer someday for their actions. Please just vote “no.”
    If a small child pleads to vote no because of Dad yelling at Mom, throwing stuff and cussing her out because of drinking, it has to be right to vote “no.”
    If someone has it more handy to buy, you know it would be worse. Please for the sake of our children, please vote no
