  • Owen County Historical Soceity: ‘Rebel Fight Song’ has roots in the 1950s

    “They always call our boys the Rebels
    They fight, fight to the end
    They can dribble fast or slow
    Give them the ball and just look at them go
    Hip Hip Hooray for Owen County Rebels
    They’re gonna win it tonight
    So give a great big cheer
    For the heroes of the year
    For Owen County High”

    For 60 years the Rebel Fight Song has reverberated from the walls of gymnasiums. For a few years less, it has echoed across baseball diamonds and football fields.

  • Poets share their art with public

    The Owen County Arts Council recently hosted its second poetry reading at the Wild Goose Cafe, bringing Owen County’s varied culture to literary fans of all ages.
    Joan Goderwis, a member of the Owen County Arts Council, said the idea for a poetry reading came from fellow council member Patty Petzinger.

  • Getting his stripes

    It is not often a basketball referee is cheered. Most of the time it is quite the opposite.
    Friday night in Owenton, one official got cheers and even a few hugs.
    Owen County native Robert ‘Buck’ Beverly officiated basketball in the Eighth Region for 10 years. When a health condition forced him to hang up his whistle and pick up a clipboard, he gladly accepted. Now instead of blowing his whistle on the court, he sits in the stands and evaluates those who make the calls on it.
    As an assistant evaluator of officials, Beverly has the chance to remain close to the game he loves so much.

  • Heartfelt support

    Approximately 400 people attended the Seventh Annual Walk for Awareness of CHDs, helping to bring comfort to those families with a child suffering from a congenital heart defect.
    The biggest event of the year for God’s Special Little Hearts, Inc., founder and chairperson Kathryn Columbia, said this year’s event raised nearly $9,000.

  • Owen countian throws his hat in race for U.S. rep.

    After U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis recently decided not to seek re-election, a 25-year Owen County resident has filed to run for Kentucky’s Fourth District congressional race.
    Republican Marcus Carey, a lawyer, political blogger, public speaker and farmer said he chose to file for election after looking at other candidates who he feels are, “far less than inspiring.”

  • Search begins for next high school principal

    A principal-selection committee has been formed after Owen County High School Principal Danny Osborne waas recently named the district’s director of curriculum and instruction.
    Owen County School District Superintendent David Raleigh said he hopes the community will become involved in the selection process.

  • Another Perfect Performance

    The football team did it.
    The Lady Rebels basketball team did it too.
    On Thursday night in Eminence, the Runnin’ Rebels also achieved perfection in district play.
    Owen County High School defeated the Warriors 69-44 to finish the season unbeaten in 31st district action.
    When one includes wins over Gallatin County and Carroll County in the Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic, the Rebels went 10-0 against district competition. It is the first time the team has finished the season unbeaten in the 31st district.

  • State-bound cheerleaders

    Cheerleaders normally spend their time on the sidelines getting fans to cheer for whichever team is on the field or the court.
    Saturday, the Owen County High School cheerleaders themselves will be the ones taking center stage and receiving the cheers.  
    Thanks to their win at the Kentucky Association of Pep Organization Sponsors eighth-region cheerleading competition that took place in January in Owenton, the squad will head to Bowling Green Saturday to compete in the KAPOS State-at-Large Cheerleading Competition.
