    Leonia Smith and Tracy Perry are happy to announce the birth of their daughter, Aprille Jean Perry, born Aug. 22, 2011.  She weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces and was 19.5-inches long.
    Grandparents are Eartha and Gary Moore and David and Charlotte Smith.

  • Strohmeier awarded scholarship to business, entrepreneurship forum

    Kim David Strohmeier of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service was awarded a full scholarship to attend the 29th Annual Entrepreneurship Education forum that was held Nov. 4-7 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
    This scholarship was awarded for Strohmeier’s leadership and creativity in bringing entrepreneurship education to the schools.
    The Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education is a national membership association of 95 organizations.

  • Local students try to become budget hero

    How difficult is it to balance the federal budget? Kevin Webster’s AP Government class and Mr. McMillen’s U.S. History class took a trip to the McConnell Center Sept. 30 to find out.
    Forty students and teachers from Kentucky high schools played the new web-based simulation game, “Budget Hero,” to try to solve fiscal problems. The game required the students to attempt to solve the current budget crisis, which proved to be extremely difficult.

  • Boehner offers Owen County students insight into politics

    On Oct. 31, 26 Owen County High School students attended the University of Louisville to hear U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner.
    Boehner discussed the issues of jobs, the current economy, and the institution of the House. In company with Boehner were Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, U of L President James R. Ramsey, McConnell Center Director Dr. Gary Gregg, and U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-KY.

    I must start off with a correction. It was not Jeannie Williams Baker who went to the dance with Joyce, Cig and Coleman. It was Jeannie Barber Jones. I’m not sure if it was me reading it wrong or Wanda’s mistake. I do have a tendency to anticipate when I read the e-mails late at night. I may have read “Jeannie,” and because the only Jeannie I know is Jeannie Williams, I just typed in her name instead of actually reading the sentence verbatim.
