  • More missing money

    The Owen County Fiscal Court is searching for over $600 that has apparently disappeared.

    At the December meeting, it was revealed that $629.28 was withheld from a county employee’s paycheck for tax purposes. However, the money never made it to the IRS.

    The magistrates voted to pay  the employee’s missing taxes as well as all interest and penalties due to the IRS. The court also voted to reimburse the same employee for $119.41 in overpayment of taxes.

    However, the main question is still unanswered. Where did the money go?

  • Former official admits guilt in theft case

    The former Owen County deputy judge-executive charged in connection with theft of public money has changed her plea from not guilty to guilty.

    Renaee Gaines admitted her guilt in Owen County Circuit Court Tuesday before Owen County Circuit Court Judge Stephen Bates.

    Gaines was charged with two counts of theft, complicity to theft of services and official misconduct in connection with the misappropriation of public money.

  • Tough week for Rebels

    It was not the kind of week the Owen County Rebels had in mind.

    The week opened with the game at Gallatin County being snowed out followed by a pair of road games.

    The Rebels traveled to Henry County Thursday and then headed to Bourbon County to take part in the Kentucky Bank Shootout. In both cases, the Rebels lost.

    Thursday night’s game at New Castle came down to the final seconds. The Rebels had a one-point lead with 16 seconds to play but Henry County had one more possession.

  • Owen girls win opening game of tourney

    The week included a game being snowed out, another one going down to the wire and another ending with a victory.

    The Lady Rebels were scheduled to travel to Gallatin County early last week but the game was cancelled due to winter weather that came through the area.

    Friday, Owen County bused to Henry County to take on the Lady Wildcats.

    Henry County opened up the game by scoring the first five points.

    The News-Herald Angel Tree helps local children know the joy of Christmas through the generosity of their neighbors.

    Stop by our office at 152 W. Bryant Street in Owenton and pick up an Angel Tree card from the tree. Each card contains information about a local child and what they want for Christmas. The request is usually for an item of clothing, shoes or a small toy.

    The Angel Tree gifts are wrapped and returned to our office for distribution before Christmas.

  • Lady Rebels win district rematch

    The last time Owen County and Carroll County met in Owenton the 31st District Championship was on the line.

    That night, the Lady Rebels won the game 49-39 and cut down the nets.

    Nine months later, the Lady Panthers came back to town looking to get even.

    It looked for a while like the visitors were going to go home happy.

    The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 19-10 at the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead to 24-10 before the Lady Rebels began the comeback.

  • Bowling Middle School Girls take title

    The last time it happened was 2003. Some of the names on that team included Kelsey Wiliams and Kendall Cochran. On Dec. 6, the Bowling Middle School girls basketball team again captured the Eighth Grade Single “A” title.

    This year’s squad won the tourney by defeating Gallatin County 48-34 in the championship game. It was the third time this season the Lady Rebels defeated the Lady Wildcats.

    Bowling Middle School opened up the event with a bye in the first round before defeating Williamstown 40-24 in the second round.

  • Residents urged to attend meeting on West Perry project

    Do we have eminent domain going on here in Owenton? It sure seems like it.

    I encourage all of you to go and look at the old drug store and the building beside it. Plaster is falling off the ceiling. Water has stood in the floor. In the old drug store, the ceiling fan is bent down from where it has leaked. Hardly any of the windows are left in the building.

    I encourage you to go and look behind these buildings. You might be surprised to see what is back there. There are broken steps, wires are everywhere and the backdoor is open for kids to go in.

  • Letter about Fido Fiesta was off the mark

    After reading the letter to the editor titled “Mother Says Wine and Kids Don’t Mix” in last week’s paper, initially I decided there is no point in responding.

    However, after further consideration as director/founder/president of OCFA, the entity that hosted “Fido Fiesta” and the representative that invited minors to assist, I believe it is my responsibility to respectfully respond to Ms. Morris.

  • Coaches honor Owen County soccer team for academic success

    The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has named the 2008 winners of the Team Academic Awards and once again the Owen County Rebels have made the list.

    The list includes only those teams with a minimum grade-point average of 3.25 for the entire academic year. For Coach Jerry Doolin, his team’s GPA was 3.30. Only four other boys teams qualified for the award. They were Danville, Owensboro, St. Xavier and Trinity. It is the 11th year in a row the Rebels have made the list.
