  • Track teams run well at Walton

    The Owen County track teams should be well acquainted with the track at Walton-Verona. The teams competed in two events at the facility last week. The first came May 7 when they took part in the NCKC Meet and the second Saturday in the Class “A” Meet. In the May 7 NCKC meet, both the boys and the girls finished fourth in the overall team standings.

    For the girls, Melina Bress finished second in the 100-meter dash. Kelsey Johnson finished eighth and Rachel Dauwe 10th in the 100-meter hurdles.

  • Rebels fall in title game

    The schedule has not been easy for the Owen County baseball team. As the season winds down, however, it looks like the degree of difficulty may be paying off.

    After playing two games May 4 and 5, the Rebels entered the NCKC Tournament May 6 at Dunavent Field looking to turn things around.

  • State grant to provide armor for local cops

    The city of Owenton has been awarded $1,840 from the state Law Enforcement Protection Program (LEPP) to purchase body armor, Gov. Steve Beshear announced Monday.

    Under the LEPP, administered by the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security (KOHS), appropriate agencies can seek financial help for certain defensive items essential in the course of their duties.

  • Teacher finds handgun in student’s jacket

    An Owen County student has been suspended for bringing a handgun to the high school Friday.

    According to Owen County Superintedent Mark Cleveland, the male student left class with an excused absence.

    About 1:30 p.m., the student’s teacher noticed the boy had left his jacket.

    When the teacher lifted the jacket, she found it was unusually heavy and immediately took it to assistant principal Charles Hagg.

    Inside the jacket, Hagg found a Browning 25mm handgun, two boxes of ammunition and some alleged drug paraphernalia.

  • Floating a new idea around

    Owen County High School teacher Rusty Willhoite’s Technical Design and Application class has kept busy this year designing and building a hovercraft.

    The class recently completed the project, which was more than a year in the making and was a group effort by the class.

    Owen County School Superintendent Mark Cleveland said seven years ago he toured several schools in Indiana that incorporated robotics within the classroom. Cleveland was so awed by the classrooms that he had an industrial arts room built at OCHS.

  • Owen judo finishes third in Indiana

    In their last tournament of the school year, the Owen County Judo Team competed  May 2 at the “Indiana State Judo Championship.” The Indiana Judo Association opens their state championship to players from other states, which allowed Owen County to compete in it. With 54 points, Owen County took the third-place team trophy.

    Eleven Owen County players competed in 18 different divisions and placed as follows:

  • BMS soccer season winds down

    The soccer season for the Bowling Middle School teams is wrapping up.

    The teams played a pair of games last week. The girls’ team hosted Anderson County Home School.

    Katie Smith scored a goal in the first half to put the Rebels on top. They took the lead into the second half before the squad from Anderson County rallied for two goals late in the contest to pick up the win.

    The coed team headed to Frankfort May 7 to play Frankfort Middle School.

    Six different players scored goals as the Rebels picked up a 6-0 victory.

  • Owen County track teams sets more records

    The records keep falling this season for the Owen County track teams.

    The teams combined to set three more school records last week at the Grant County All-Comers Meet in Dry Ridge April 28.

    In the girls’ meet, it was Kelsey Johnson who set a school record in the 300-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:00.47 was good enough for 11th place.  Her teammate Melina Bress finished 13th.

    Haley DeCandia set new school record in the high jump. Her jump of 4-4 placed her fourth while Danielle Ransdell finished fifth.

  • Court approves hirings for road department

    The Owen County Fiscal Court held a special meeting April 30 to approve two new employees for the county road department.

    Randy Fitzgerald and Travis Wainscott were hired to fill the vacancies left by Mark King and Welborne Grey.

    The vacancies were advertised during the winter, and Road Supervisor and Solid Waste Coordinator Greg Smoot interviewed applicants.

    The fiscal court must approve all county employee appointments.

  • Rebels pick up a win

    The Owen County baseball team dodged rain drops last week to play three games.

    The Rebels played at home against Frankfort and then played at Carroll County and Anderson County.

    On April 27, the Rebels picked up a 7-0 win over Frankfort at Dunavent Field.

    The Rebels then traveled to Carrollton April 28 to take on the Panthers.

    Carroll County was 10-4 heading into the game. They defeated Owen County 13-3. The loss meant the Rebels finished their district seed games with a record of 2-1.
