Owen County has often been recognized for its beautiful landscape, its number of skilled craftsmen, and a strong sense of community. However, this summer Owen County will be recognized on a worldwide level when the U.S. Open Sporting Clay Championship takes place at Elk Creek Hunt Club.

The U.S. Open is the second largest sporting clay event in the world. More than 1,000 shooters from all over the world are expected to compete in the event, which takes place June 23-28.

Elk Creek Hunt Club Manager Gary Kathman said planning the event has been a two-year process.

It sure did not feel like spring for much of last week. It was, however, spring break in Owen County and with the break came some rest from playing games for much of the week.

The softball team was off all last week and was not scheduled to return to action until Monday when they traveled to Henry County.

The girls also were scheduled to host Carroll County last night before hosting Gallatin County Wednesday night in a make-up game from an earlier rainout.

Owen County Public Library Director Jennifer Nippert keeps a busy schedule in order to make sure adults and children alike get the best use of the library.

It’s National Library Week, a week that the library staff will use to get to know library patrons better, and a week to demonstrate how they serve the community.

Tuesday, the library hosted a meet-and-greet for the community.

“We wanted to be able to show the community exactly what all it is we do here,” Nippert said.

After reviewing plans for the new Owen County Judicial Center, the state board in charge of approving the designs has called on the county to remove over 6,500 square feet from the project.

Under guidelines supported by Kentucky, the current design of the new courthouse must be scaled back to be approved by the Court Facilities Standards Committee.

Although funding for the nearly $12 million dollar Owen project is secure, the design must be approved before the new courthouse can move forward.
