  • Season ends for volleyball squad

    The 2013 Owen County High School Lady Rebels volleyball season has ended.
    The season wrapped up Oct. 22 in Eminence when the team lost in the semifinals of the 31st District volleyball tournament.
    Owen County began the tournament by taking on Gallatin County High School in the opening round Oct. 21.

  • Cross-country team makes a run at Meet of Champions

    The Owen County High School cross-country team took to the road Saturday for the Meet of Champions at Masterson Station Park in Lexington,
    Owen County’s Autumn Hunter placed sixth among freshmen and Audrey Hager came in 15th in the freshmen race.
    Cory Hudnall improved his season best time to 18:07 and Audrey Hager dropped 1:07 off her personal record.
    Owen County sixth graders Jalen Spaulding and Westley Johnson ended their first cross-country seasons strong in the sixth and under 3K race.

  • Act of sportsmanship earns Hoop honor

    Two University of the Cumberlands Patriot athletes completely exemplify this as recently, they were announced as award winners on the highest stage of the NAIA.
    Junior Danielle Hoop, a graduate of Owen County High School, and senior Darcy Mascotti of Bellbrook, Ohio were announced as the NAIA Collegiate Student-Athletes of the Year Award winners.
    This is one of the highest honors that an individual athlete can receive while competing in the NAIA.

  • Medicare Part D Assistance program to be held Tuesday

    The State Health Insurance Assistance Program and Senior Medicare Patrol are offering free Medicare prescription drug comparison assistance for Medicare beneficiaries at the Owen County Public Library on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    Bring your Medicare card and list of names and dosage of prescriptions you take.

  • Carroll and Quarles to meet public at library

    The Owen County Public Library will celebrate one year at its new location by hosting a meet and greet with State Sen. Julian Carroll and State Rep. Ryan Quarles on Tuesday, starting at 6:30 p.m.
    Everyone is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be provided.

  • Wheatley residents planning holiday dinner

    The Wheatley Community Center Thanksgiving Celebration will be held Nov. 23 at the Community Center.  
    There will be a planning meeting Sunday afternoon, at 3 p.m. for anyone who would like to help with the celebration.
    In other news, a summer project of painting the outside of the center is ongoing.
    Two community members have spent numerous hours scrapping and painting the front and one side of the building.

  • Moving Day: Owen County Senior Citizens Center relocates to former library building

    On their first day in a newly-renovated facility, attendees of the Owen County Senior Center were already getting down to the business of fun Monday.
    Some congregated in the kitchen area over Halloween crafts, while others played cards or Scrabble, but the seniors all agreed that the spacious new center would provide them with years of enjoyment.
    The center officially moved to 118 N. Main St., the old Owen County Public Library, Monday.

  • New Owen Co. lawmakers to meet public at library

    Kentucky State Sen. Julian Carroll, D-Frankfort, and State Rep. Ryan Quarles, R-Georgetown,  have recently taken time to get acquainted with Owen County.
    Next month, the entire community will get the opportunity to meet their new legislators.
    A Legislative Meet and Greet will be held at the Owen County Public Library Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
    Carroll and Quarles are expected to attend the event organized by the Friends of Kentucky Libraries each October.

  • Sex offender indicted by Owen County grand jury

    An Owen County man was recently indicted for failure to comply with the sex-offender registry
    Kentucky State Police Post 5 Public Affairs Trooper Brad Arterburn said Heith A. Necessary, 31, was registered as living in Owenton during a routine checkup when law enforcement discovered he was no longer at the residence.
    It was Necessary’s second offense.
    Arterburn said the checkups take place every few months and sex offenders have to register their new addresses once they relocate.

  • Owenton man involved in Indiana semi truck crash

    A semi carrying coiled steel left I-74 and caught fire shortly after 8:30 p.m. Oct. 14, sending the driver to the hospital and shutting down portions of the interstate for a period of time.
