  • Owen County track teams sets more records

    The records keep falling this season for the Owen County track teams.

    The teams combined to set three more school records last week at the Grant County All-Comers Meet in Dry Ridge April 28.

    In the girls’ meet, it was Kelsey Johnson who set a school record in the 300-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:00.47 was good enough for 11th place.  Her teammate Melina Bress finished 13th.

    Haley DeCandia set new school record in the high jump. Her jump of 4-4 placed her fourth while Danielle Ransdell finished fifth.

  • Court approves hirings for road department

    The Owen County Fiscal Court held a special meeting April 30 to approve two new employees for the county road department.

    Randy Fitzgerald and Travis Wainscott were hired to fill the vacancies left by Mark King and Welborne Grey.

    The vacancies were advertised during the winter, and Road Supervisor and Solid Waste Coordinator Greg Smoot interviewed applicants.

    The fiscal court must approve all county employee appointments.

  • Rebels pick up a win

    The Owen County baseball team dodged rain drops last week to play three games.

    The Rebels played at home against Frankfort and then played at Carroll County and Anderson County.

    On April 27, the Rebels picked up a 7-0 win over Frankfort at Dunavent Field.

    The Rebels then traveled to Carrollton April 28 to take on the Panthers.

    Carroll County was 10-4 heading into the game. They defeated Owen County 13-3. The loss meant the Rebels finished their district seed games with a record of 2-1.

  • Beauty in a barrel

    The 2008 Leadership Owen County group is sprucing up the downtown area with a spring theme in hopes of leaving a lasting impression on its citizens and those visiting the area.

    The group took yearlong classes in leadership and the importance of community and graduated November of last year. Upon graduating, each group decides upon a project. The 2008 group chose Downtown Beautification.

  • Weather puts damper on softball schedule

    The toughest opponent on last week’s softball schedule may have been the forecast.

    The Lady Rebels were able to play Williamstown early last week.

    Owen County jumped out on top of the Lady Demons in the top of the first inning. Kenzie Criswell singled and Samantha Toole walked before a double by Courtney Waldrop scored Criswell. A single by Jensen Wainscott then drove in Toole and Waldrop for an early 3-0 lead.

    Owen County would add on another run in the second as Lauren Lowe singled to drive in Brittany Tuggle to make the score 4-0.

  • High School Musical will be Owen’s last strictly senior play

    The 2009 Owen County High School Senior Class will be performing a play production of the smash movie Disney’s “High School Musical.” 

    At the beginning of this school year, Owen County drama teacher and director Lee Ann Gamm wasn’t sure if her senior drama class could pull off such a huge production. 

    One Sunday afternoon, she and 11 of her students drove 10 hours, round trip, to see the play performed in North Canton, Ohio.

  • Board picks new construction firm

    Members of the Owen County Board of Education met April 28 to choose another construction company for the middle school project, which was delayed when problems arose with Quantum Construction’s bid.

    Members of the board voted to select D.W. Wilburn Inc. for the project. The company is located in Lexington and has completed projects that include the Pulaski County Public Library and Bryan Station High School in Lexington.

  • There should be a penalty for changing sides

    Where do you stand on officeholders who switch parties?

    For me, these people should be forced to sit out a year.

    When a 19-year-old college basketball player decides it would help his career to transfer to another school, there are all sorts of penalties including the possibility of sitting out a year.

    But if a politician decides it will advance (or continue) a career, they are allowed to turn their backs on the voters who put them in office and the party platform they agreed to support.

  • BMS track team shines at Western Hills

    The Bowling Middle School track team was in action April 29. The team took part in the Western Hills Middle School meet in Frankfort.

    In the girls meet, Haley DeCandia finished ninth in the 400-meter dash while Maggie Barnes placed 23rd.

    In the 800-meter run it was Alicia Garvey placing ninth. Garvey also ran well in the 1600-meter as she finished sixth.

    DeCandia ran to a fifth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with Ashley Tyler finishing 11th. The 4x400-meter relay team finished sixth.

  • County begins budget process

    Being new to the judge-executive office has kept Carolyn Keith’s hands full. Her most recent task has been overseeing the 2009-2010 Owen County budget.

    Members of the fiscal court met April 23 for a budget workshop. The main topic discussed was how to get advanced life support (ALS) established in Owen County.

    An ALS ambulance is one that is equipped with all of the supplies needed to care for a severely injured or ill person and has at least one paramedic and one EMT on board. The paramedic on board would have the ability to administer life-saving drugs.
