  • Owen County Extension Service News: Play so kids are ready for kindergarten

    Parents often ask what young children need to know before they start kindergarten. Put simply, they need time and space to play. Did you know that a United Nations high commission has even noted the right to play as one of the Universal Rights of the Child? Play is how children learn. The activity does not matter. It can be building with blocks or cuddling a teddy bear. It can be putting together a puzzle or jumping in puddles in the rain. It can even be washing dishes and reading a book. If a child is having fun, creating and discovering new things, this is play.

  • Find a fishing frenzy at Kentucky River this year

    It flows through the heart of Kentucky for some 255 miles from the confluence of the North and South forks at Beattyville to the Ohio River at Carrollton.
    The Kentucky River is a scenic waterway with numerous quiet backwaters and tree-shaded tributary streams. For the enterprising angler who is willing to spend some time looking at maps and driving back roads, the search for places to launch a fishing kayak or bass boat will reap many rewards.

  • Owen County Youth Soccer League: Orange Crush takes championship

    HotShots - 4 vs. Team Clemons - 2
    The HotShots had a great regular season with a record of five wins, one loss and two ties entering U8 Tournament play.
    The HotShots opened up the tournament with a 4 to 2 win over Team Clemons.
    Price Griffin scored on the opening kick-off with an assist from Blaine Spencer. With an assist from Eli Myers, Price Griffin scored a second goal in the first quarter.
    Eli Myers scored in the third quarter following a Team Clemons score to make the score 3 to 1.

  • Young green thumbs

    The Owen County 4-H Cloverbuds met at the Owen County Courthouse May 15 to plant flowers as a community service project. The Cloverbuds had a great time planting flowers in each of the barrels around the courthouse, as well as up and down Seminary Street. There were about 25 kids ages 5-8, who showed up to help.
