  • Sports briefly: Owen County High School golf teams

  • Running strong

    The Owen County High School cross country team competed in its first meet of the season at Williamstown. The boys varsity finished in second place with Hunter Trenary coming in first place  overall.  A new personal record was set by Logan Bitler:  19:15 vs 20:25. The team was back in action Tuesday at Gallatin County Fairgrounds.

  • Lady Rebels rally to save week

    The Owen County High School volleyball team headed to Grant County Aug. 28 on a three match losing streak. After two sets against the Lady Braves, it looked certain another loss was in the cards.
    Then it happened.
    After losing the first two sets by 2 points each, 25-23 and 32-30, the Lady Rebels began the comeback. They would win the third set 25-20 and then the fourth 25-22 to set up the deciding fifth set.
    Once the fifth set began, the outcome was never in doubt as Owen County dominated 15-3.

  • Rebels fall in home opener

    If Friday night’s home opener against Bourbon County High School had a reset button, the Owen County High School Rebels would have pushed it.
    The start of the game was delayed momentarily to fix a clock issue and when the Rebels finally did kickoff to the Colonels it quickly went downhill.

  • Owen County girls take Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic title

    After starting the week with a pair of losses, the Owen County High School Lady Rebels finished on a positive note.
    The team played Carroll County High School in the championship game of the Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic in Owenton Saturday morning. It was the first meeting of the season between the two schools which are in the same district this season.
    The Lady Rebels jumped on top in the first half when Morgan Walker scored from close range to give the Lady Rebels a 1-0 lead.

  • Owen County boys win Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic

    The Owen County High School boys soccer team claimed a championship on Saturday.
    The Rebels won the Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic in Owenton by defeating Carroll County 3-1.
    Owen County played Monday against Louisville Collegiate in Louisville in the All ‘A’ sub-sectional.
    The Rebels got a first half goal from Austin Collins to lead 1-0 at the half.

  • Use of federal dollars called into question

    The Kentucky Office of Education Accountability recently wrapped up an investigation centering on actions of a former district employee.
    The OEA began the investigation in October 2011 after receiving an anonymous complaint from within the Owen County School District.

  • Dedicated to the Fine Print

    Walking into the offices of Larkspur Press in Monterey, it’s hard not to be impressed by the sense of history.
    Although modern and clean, the workshop used by Gray Zeitz, his wife Jean, and Leslie Shane, reflects a slower time of publishing when each page was hand fed into a press and each book was a work of art within itself.
    Because of the quality and dedication to his craft, Gray recently received the  Artist Award from the Kentucky Arts Council for lifetime achievement.

  • Annual Sweet Owen Day approaches

    As summer begins to wind down, fall festivals are being scheduled throughout the state, including one of Owen County’s biggest yearly events – Sweet Owen Day.
    This year’s event will take place on the courthouse square Saturday, Sept. 15 and a full lineup of music, talent shows, pageants, food and fun are scheduled.
    The event will kickoff with the annual Rotary Pancake Breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by a run/walk at 8:30 a.m.
