  • Staying downtown

    The Owen County Sheriff’s Office will be staying put after all.

    After several weeks of debate, the Owen County Fiscal Court rejected a proposal that would temporarily move the department to a rented building on U.S. 22E.

    The plan to move the department was sparked by concerns of employees’ health. It was reported that several staff members had suffered from upper-respiratory problems.

  • Looking back at our first vacation

    Editor’s Note: Georgia Green Stamper is on vacation. This column first appeared in August 2008.

    In August of 1956, Daddy observed that his tobacco crop needed another couple of weeks to yellow in the fields before cutting. If my mother and I wanted, he allowed as how he could slip away from the farm work for a few days, and we could join his sisters and their families on a short vacation trip to the Smokey Mountains.

  • Owen County TAPP recognized with state award

    To a standing ovation from substance abuse and addiction treatment specialists across the state, the Owen County Teen Alcohol Prevention Project Youth Task Force was honored July 21 with the Robert Straus Award for outstanding contributions for substance abuse prevention and treatment practices in Kentucky.

    “Ladies and gentlemen, these are your future colleagues,” said Donna Hillman, state director of the Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities, under which prevention efforts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky fall.

  • Looking for a victory

    In the game of football, it often takes three years before a wide receiver has a breakout season.

    The Owen County volleyball team is hoping the same holds true for them.

    Owen County High School Volleyball Coach Amanda Borchers and the rest of the team are entering year number three looking for win number one. If you ask some of those around the program, they will tell you that all of that is about to change.

    The Lady Rebels opened the season Monday night at home against Trimble County. But victory once again eluded Owen County as the Lady Rebels fell, 0-2.

  • Letter to the Editor: Driver is a trusted friend

    There is a service that Owen County provides to its citizens that I suspect is not generally well known. The service is one whereby the county will provide transportation, to and from medical appointments, for its citizens, mostly – though not limited to – its senior citizens.

  • Bethany School reunion held at Noble's

    Twenty-five people attended the Bethany School reunion on July 11 at Noble’s Restaurant near Corinth. After the blessing of the food, delicious meals were enjoyed as proud grandparents shared exciting moments of their grandchildren.

    The next planned get-together will be at noon Nov. 20 at the Smith House Restaurant in Owenton.

    Six “get well” greetings were sent to some who usually attend the party.

  • Cleaning out the attic

    Cleanup has begun on the Owen County Sheriff’s Office.

    On  Aug. 3, the Owen County Fiscal Court voted to keep the sheriff’s office at its current location. Since then, the company chosen to do the cleanup – Goderwis Construction Inc. – has started making headway.

    Owen County Judge-Executive Carolyn Keith said the cleanup started Aug. 5 with the removal of old documents that took up a large amount of space on the second floor.

  • Kay’s Branch News

    The creek was over my bridge again last week. This time we had three inches of rain in about two hours and it was about 23 inches above the floor of the bridge. The bridge held again but it needs a bit of help this time. As soon as John gets through with his painting, I’ll get him down here to do some minor repairs on it.

  • Clinic opens doors to public

    A new medical clinic in Owen County had been the dream of many people since 2001 when plans first began. Eight years and some delays later, the dream has finally come true.

    New Horizons Family Practice officially opened Aug. 3, a year after construction began.

    The new clinic’s office manager, Kim Knochelmann, said the staff had reached the point where their old building, located next to New Horizons Medical Center, was not big enough
