  • Middle school football season begins with new faces

    There will be a lot of new faces around the Bowling Middle School football team this season.

    After last year’s team finished the season with a perfect 8-0 regular season and a loss to Grant County in the opening round of the playoffs ,head coach Jeff Jump decided to step down.

    His replacement is not a stranger to the program. Tommy Tackett took over as head coach.

  • Police seize over 200 marijuana plants in Owen

    The Kentucky State Police and the Owen County Sheriff’s department conducted a marijuana eradication detail Aug. 19 in southern Owen County.

    Two large plots, containing 225 plants, were spotted in southeast Owen County by police aircraft. The surveillance.

    According to Kevin Woosley of the Kentucky State Police, depending on the quality of buds, the plants could fetch up to $1,000 per plant in the illegal drug trade.

  • Guest Editorial: People should unite against political abuses

    An Aug. 5 Opinion letter from Chris LeSuer petitioned KACo (Kentucky Association of Counties) to provide an explanation for their representation of an Owen County official (to the tune of $51,000) accused of crimes against the taxpayers.

    LeSuer referenced a July 1 article in the Lexington Herald which verified that KACo (a taxpayer-funded organization) routinely offers this type of representation.

    The media exposure of KACo’s questionable practice of utilizing tax dollars in this manner has provoked some dissatisfaction in the community.

  • Kangaroo sighting

    At 1:30 a.m., a week ago last Saturday, Mike Rollins was driving to work on Hwy. 1883 when he spotted a very unusual animal. Rollins said when he realized he had seen something out of the ordinary, he stopped his truck and backed up.

    “I’ve seen a lot of exotic animals,” Rollins said. “I’d never seen a kangaroo before though.”

    The animal “was standing alongside a fence row with several deer,” Rollins said. “He didn’t seem too scared because once I stopped I sat and stared at it for a while.”

  • Boys golf team finishes second at NCKC match

    The Owen County boys golf team is off to a good start in the 2009 season.

    The Rebels hosted the NCKC Tournament Saturday at Fairway Golf Course. Owen County finished second behind Walton-Verona. The team was led by Jarrod Ball, who shot a 79. The score was good enough for a second-place finish among individual golfers. Zach Ripy had the eighth-best round of the day as he shot an 83.

    Colton New posted an 89 while Brody Layton shot a 99. Jon Locker shot a 107 for the Rebels.

  • Watson to perform at Kentucky State Fair

    Bill Watson, pastor of First Christian Church in Owenton and respected storyteller, will be sharing his tales of history with a statewide audience at the Kentucky State Fair.

    Although well-known for his portrayal of American Civil War solider “James,” Watson said this performance will focus on other stories of American history.

    Watson will perform Aug. 27-28 at 3 p.m. in the northern wing of the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville as part of the Kentucky State Fair.

    The event is free and open to the public.
