  • Water will soon flow along Harmony Road

    After years of being promised water, the dream has finally come true for those living on Harmony Road.

    The Peaks Mill Water District in Franklin County will be providing water once all of the property easements for water lines are in place. Owen County Magistrate Teresa Davis said all but two easements have been signed.

    Davis said bids for construction on the water line will be put out in September and bidding will open the first of October. If all goes well, Harmony Road should have water by Christmas.

  • Owen County golf team has a classic week

    The Owen County girl’s golf team is an example of how experience and hard work pay off.

    The team won its first-ever eighth region All “A” Classic golf tournament Aug. 26 at Eagle Creek Golf Course. The win was the team’s second big win of the season. The Lady Rebels won the NCKC Tournament earlier this year.

    “I told the girls that all our matches and practices paid off with our NCKC and Class ‘A’ wins,” Owen County Girls’ Golf Coach David Wainscott said.

  • Soccer team gets win in unusual fashion

    The Owen County girls’ soccer team pulled off something unusual in its opening game of the Capital City Classic last week.

    The team picked up its first win of the season as they knocked off Western Hills 1-0 in a contest where they did not have a shot on goal for the entire game. The lone goal of the game came from Ashley Byers in a shootout.

    The Lady Rebels had a couple of scoring opportunities but could not convert. Defensively, Owen County put in a solid effort and Samantha Toole had 26 saves in goal to preserve the win.

  • Cheerleaders honored for efforts

    If you have ever had the privilege of attending a sporting event in Kentucky, chances are you found yourself surrounded by fans.

    In Kentucky, fans flock to sporting events ranging from the collegiate level to the local Little League and T-ball teams.

    Owen County fans are no different. 

    However, seldom do you see a large following of fans for a cheer competition.

  • Fiscal court alters road repair plans

    The Owen County Fiscal Court is looking for ways to stretch some highway repair dollars.

    Earlier this year, the county received its annual allotment from the state’s fund for secondary roads. The money is given out each year to help repair and renovate county roads.

    The county received thousands of dollars from the state’s secondary road fund. The funding was earmarked for one project on U.S. 36 and three projects for Ky. 1883.

    But by the time the U.S. 36 renovations were complete, only about $164,000 was left.

  • Ogden honored for efforts during ice storm

    Owen County resident Scott Ogden has been honored with the 2009 Support Staff of the Year award from the Southern States Corrections Association.

    Ogden is employed by the Kentucky Department of Corrections and works at Blackburn Correctional Complex in Lexington where he serves as farm manager.

    He was selected from candidates from 14 other states.  Ogden, his wife Rebecca, and their family traveled to New Orleans in July in order for him to receive the honor.

  • While some county taxes go up, others fall

    Although members of the Owen County Fiscal Court recently voted to raise the county’s property tax to 11.8 from last year’s 11.7, some tangible or personal property tax rates have been lowered.

    The 2009 watercraft and motor-vehicle tax rate will stay the same as last year’s 14.8. The aircraft and personal property rates have been lowered from 15 to 14.2.

    Owen County Judge-Executive Carolyn Keith said any time the real estate rate goes up, the tangible rates come down.

  • School board raises tax rate

    Due to cuts in funding and mandated salary increases, the Owen County School Board has decided to increase its 2010 tax rate.

    The board voted to take the 4-percent increase. This year’s real estate rate will be 56.6, up from last year’s rate of 54.8. The personal property rates have dropped from last year’s rate of 60.4 to 58.8. The motor vehicle rate and utility tax rate will remain the same.

    Owen County Board of Education Finance Officer Sheila Miller said the Owen County school district is not the only district to experience a budget problem.

  • Robert Beverly ranked No. 5 in the country

    Over 600 competitors from as far away as Armenia, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Australia, South Africa, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and South America gathered at the Broward County Convention Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Aug. 1-2 for the Junior U.S. Open Judo Championship.

  • Here come the Rebels

    The Owen County Rebels kick off the 2009 season on Saturday night. The team will travel to Grant County to take on the Braves at 8 p.m. as part of the Grant County Gridiron Kickoff Classic.

    Owen County and second-year head football coach Adam Fowler are looking to improve on 2008 when the Rebels won two games and lost in the first round of the playoffs to eventual state runner-up Newport Central Catholic.
