  • Relay kickoff event to be held at gym

    This year’s Relay for Life events will kickoff  Feb. 12 with a special event at the Owen County High School gymnasium.

    During the Lady Rebels’ game against Trimble County, organizers hope to fill the stands with survivors and teams in Relay gear to show support for the Relay for Life event.

    Relay for Life helps raise money and awareness on behalf of the American Cancer Society to honor the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and combat the disease.

  • Georgia: On My Mind

The trees, naked, reach their thin arms toward the heavens like a forest of Holocaust victims pleading for help.   • Snowball blast

    When forecasters began predicting the first big snowfall of the season, the Owen County Road Department was prepared to work long hours to keep roads safe for traveling.

    Snow began falling early Thursday morning. By Thursday afternoon Owen County Road Supervisor Greg Smoot and Owen County Judge-Executive Carolyn Keith set the snow emergency level at two.

    When: Tuesday-Saturday

    • Owen County begins play in the tournament tonight against Trimble County. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. The Lady Rebels defeated the Lady Raiders 56-36 Dec. 8 at Trimble County. Jensen Wainscott and Rianna Gayheart each had 11 points while Samantha Toole tossed in 10.

    • Gallatin County is hosting the event after they claimed the championship last year in Owenton. The Lady Wildcats then lost in the quarterfinals in Richmond.

  • Go Speed Racer

    Owen County’s 6-year-old Donnie Holleran has been racing go-karts since he was 4, and he is already receiving attention for his talent.

    Donnie, who is the son of Don and Adella Holleran, decided he wanted to race while watching the Daytona 500 on television with his dad.

    Making a new beginning is what each new year offers to all of us. A blank page on which to record the daily joys, sorrows, mistakes, and accomplishments that define us as individuals.

    As we reflect on the past year, the Owen County Historical Society has much for which to be thankful.

  • Deadlines set for farm programs

    The end of the year is usually the time we celebrate and give thanks. It is also time for producers and landowners to consider planning for the next growing season.

    Each fiscal year, the Natural Resources Conservation Service sets dates for program application ranking. Although dates may vary from one program to another, landowners may sign-up at any time for all conservation programs.
