  • Recanvass won’t change results

    A requested recanvass of votes in the May primary election came up with the same results.

    According to Owen County Clerk Joan Kincaid, a recanvass was requested by second-district constable candidate Bryan Riddle.

    The race was very close with incumbent Don Slaughter holding off Riddle’s challenge by three votes, 287-284.

    “In a close race like this, a recanvass is pretty common,” Kincaid said.

  • Rebels’ baseball season comes to an end

    The Owen County Rebels entered the 31st District Tournament May 24 with nothing to lose. The Rebels were hoping to carry the momentum gained from the win over Grant County into the contest with Carroll County.

    The Panthers had defeated Owen County twice during the season and were looking to advance to the championship game. The Rebels’ plans also included taking a trip to the title game and capping off a disappointing season with a trip to the 8th Region Tournament.

  • Traveling across time and history

    As far as we can tell, Nancy and I aren’t kin, not even a smidgen. However, my cousin’s grandmother (that would be Uncle Ed Hudson’s wife who was a Davis) is her great-aunt. Thus, in the exacting way of computers, her Google quest for roots led her to my Hudson Family tree posted on the Internet.

  • Beach Boys rock winery with classic tunes

    \Despite dark skies and the threat of rain, fans came out strong for Elk Creek Winery’s popular summer concert series kick-off.

    The series began Friday with a show by a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Beach Boys.

    The group took the audience on a musical journey, performing hits that spanned their entire career, including “409,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Good Vibrations” and “Kokomo.”

    General Manager of Elk Creek Winery Kristine Walker said about 1,400 attended the show.

  • Lady Rebels fall short in tourney

    Before taking the field May 24, the Owen County Lady Rebels were sure of one thing. If they were going to win the 31st District Tournament, they would have to go through a pair of nemeses.

    The first was Gallatin County. The two teams split four games during the regular season. No team won any of the four by more than three runs, and Gallatin County won its two games in the final at-bat. As a result, it was assumed that the first round district match-up would be similar. It was.

  • Relay raises over $70,000

    There is supporting a cause and then there is dedicating yourself to a cause.

    This weekend, dozens of Owen countians braved some showers and then some humidity and then long hours to show how much they care about and will sacrifice for the people in Owen County who are, or perhaps will be, battling cancer.

    Although the 13th annual Owen County Relay for Life formally kicked off promptly at 7 p.m. Friday, the work that led to that moment began months before. That dedication also led to a happy announcement during the opening ceremonies.

  • Owen judo squad shines in Hoosier state

    On May 22, the Owen County Judo Team competed in Portland, Ind., at the  Indiana State Judo Invitational and placed seventh out of 29 teams.

    The Owen County Judo Team returned with four first-place medals, three second-place medals, three third-place medals and one fourth-place. award

    Team players placed as follows:  Chelsae Smith, second; Jamie Sourders, third; Robert Beverly, first; Zac Widener, second; Noah Malcomb, first; Laura Lubbe, third; Madison Lubbe, third; John Thompson, second; James Thompson, first; Douglas Tyler, first; and Brandon Tyler, fourth.

  • Letter to the Editor: Will rose thief enjoy flowers?

    I planted knockout roses on the graves of my parents, grandparents and late husband last year. I visited their graves at the first of the month to see how they were doing and to trim them up a bit.

    Imagine my surprise when I went to decorate my loved ones’ graves this weekend and found one of them had been dug up, the hole filled and leaves spread over the now vacant spot where it once stood.

    Did you think I wouldn’t notice that I was missing one rose?

    Did you, perhaps think it might grow better in your yard and rescued it.

  • State bound

    When the class A state track meet begins Saturday, a pair of Owen County Rebels will be there. Dillon Mears and Bobby Mingie qualified for the meet that will be held at the University of Louisville.

    In order to qualify, a participant must finish first or second in the regional meet or have one of the remaining 10 best performances throughout each of the regions.

    The pair qualified for the state meet based on their performances at last weekend’s region 5A meet held at Tates Creek High School.
