  • Fire claims Breck Road residence

    The Owenton/Owen County Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 4030 Breck Road around 3 p.m., Thursday. Owen County Fire Chief Robb Chaney said while the house is still standing, the interior was destroyed by the blaze. The official cause of the fire has not been determined, but Chaney said it was possibly caused by faulty electric. Owen County EMS, Monterey, Jonesville, New Liberty and Corinth volunteer fire departments also responded, along with the Red Cross, Owen Electric and Kentucky American Water.

  • Library’s Active Play encourages wintertime exercise for kids

    For toddlers and their parents, cold weather does not mean staying bored indoors when at the library.
    From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday in January, the Owen County Public Library is hosting Active Play, a toddler focused event where children ages 2-6 can play indoors with their parents. While the winter season forces children to mainly stay indoors, Active Play gives toddlers the opportunity to stretch their legs and have some fun.

  • Bluegrass Antler Dogs hosts North American Shed Hunting Dog Double Qualifier

    Thirty-two dogs and their handlers braved the snow and cold Saturday for a chance to become the North American Shed Hunting Dog (NASHDA) top antler (shed) hunting dog in the region.
    The Bluegrass Antler Dog Club hosted the NASHDA Double Qualifier event on Point of Rock Road in Monterey. The event drew 32 dogs and their handlers from seven states.
    Club president John Ballard, who, along with his wife Alexandra, started the local chapter six months ago, said he was pleased with Saturday’s turnout.

  • 2018 Primary Election candidate filings

    To keep our readers up to date on the most recent candidate filings for the 2018 May Primary Election, The News-Herald will continuously update the following list until the filing period for candidates who must run in the primary ends at 4 p.m., Jan. 30. The May Primary Election will take place Tuesday, May 22.

    County Judge/Executive:
    Nov. 21 — Casey Ellis, D (incumbent)
    Dec. 8 — Franky Fitzgerald, D

  • Itron sells to investment company for $1.35 million

    Thirteen months after Itron announced its decision to cease local operations, a Covington-based investment group has purchased the facility for $1.35 million and is expected to take control of the property March 31.
    While the official owner of the building is listed as Empire Properties, LLC, its sister company, Hosea Project Movers, will oversee the property, according to Empire Properties Manager and Hosea Project Movers President Todd Hosea.

  • Weekend fires claim 2 homes

    Members of Owen County’s volunteer fire departments stayed busy Friday and Saturday fighting structure fires in the bitter cold temperatures.
    The Owenton/Owen County Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 1420 Highway 127 South at approximately 7:28 p.m., Friday.
    When firefighters arrived on the scene, Owenton Assistant Fire Chief David Lilly said the fire was contained to one room, which was “completely demolished.”

    It is influenza (flu) season once again, and health departments across the nation are practicing different ways to help prevent the further spread of the flu.

  • Candidate filing deadline is Jan. 30

    The filing deadline for the May Primary Election is quickly approaching, with only 17 candidates as of press time Tuesday.
    Democratic Owen County Judge-Executive Casey Ellis will seek a second term as the county’s top elected official. Democrat Franky Fitzgerald of Gratz also filed for the seat Dec. 8.
