  • Girl’s 31st District Preview

    • Owen County will enter this year’s tournament as the four-time defending district champs. The Lady Rebels defeated Gallatin County 58-47 in the championship game last season at Henry County.
    • The last time someone other than Owen County won the 31st District was in 2007 when Carroll County defeated Owen County 42-41 in the finals at Henry County.
    • The last someone other than Owen County or Carroll County won the 31st District was 2004 when South Oldham claimed the title.

  • Boy’s 31st District Preview

    • Henry County will enter this year’s tournament as the defending champs. The Wildcats defeated Gallatin County 67-61 last year in New Castle.
    • The last time the tournament was held in Owenton was 2008. That season saw Gallatin County and Owen County advance to the finals. The Wildcats defeated the Rebels 53-43 to claim the championship.
    • Owen County last won the 31st District in 2009. The Rebels knocked off Henry County in Carrollton to cut down down the nets.

  • Rebels ready for a run

    The regular season is over.
    The Rebels wrapped up it up last week. Owen County ended the campaign by knocking off Walton-Verona at home and falling to Oldham County on the road.
    The team finished the season by becoming just the third team in program history to win at least 20 games. Owen County finished 20-10.
    They also won 20 games in 1996 and 2007.

  • Anniversary: Marsha and Gary Derringer

    Gary and Marsha Derringer celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Feb. 19.. They were married in Marsha’s hometown, Junction City, Kansas, in 1972 and made their home in the Monterey area. Gary is retired from Peoples Bank & Trust Company, and Marsha is retired from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Their daughter, Mariah, is a junior at Owen County High.  Many family and friends joined them for a reception Sunday afternoon at the Monterey Baptist Church Education Building.

  • Kay’s Branch News: Dull weather makes for dull days

    We missed another big one over the weekend.
    All of Bill Meck’s dire predictions didn’t come to Owen County. It’s been a very strange winter, or lack of winter on the Branch, but we still have March to get through. I can remember 8 inches of snow on March 8 several years ago.

  • Cook named DAR Good Citizen

    Each year, the various chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsor a DAR Good Citizen contest for high school seniors.  
    The senior selected as “DAR Good Citizen” must have demonstrated the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

  • Tackle tough financial times together

    The recent economic recession has affected everyone’s bottom dollar.  With continued high unemployment rates and increasing gas prices and grocery bills, many couples have encountered serious financial hardships.  Learning how to work together during tough financial times is important for all couples, especially newlyweds.
