The ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. and will take place at Great Crossing Baptist Church in Georgetown. All family and friends are welcome to attend.   • Red Cross looking for new recruits in Owen

    Are you interested in giving back to your community? How about joining the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team.
     The American Red Cross will host a DAT Volunteer Recruitment Day at the Owenton City Fire Department on Friday at 6 p.m at 214 North Main Street in Owenton , KY 40359. The event is free and open to the public.

  • Ayres Orchard to host field day

    The Monterey apple orchard owned by Larry and Sherry Ayres will be the site for a state-wide Fruit Growers Field Day Saturday.
    The University of Kentucky Horticulture department is organizing a field day to focus on various aspects of orchard management. The field day will be held Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
    Topics to be covered include managing insects in an orchard, fruit rot problems, the potentials of growing pears, and, something that is of particular concern in this area, orchard wildlife management.

  • Owen Co. workers to see raises under new budget

    All non-elected Owen County employees are expected to receive raises during the next fiscal year.
    The Owen County Fiscal Court held a first reading on the 2012-13 budget ordinance May 8.
    Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith said the increases will be small, but both full- and part-time employees will receive a raise.
    The budget has already been approved by the state, Keith said.
    “They have to make sure all the numbers are OK and that everything adds up,’ Keith said. ‘They also check to make sure everything has proper classification.’

  • Annual Arts in the Park returns to fairgrounds Saturday

    The fourth annual Owen County Arts in the Park opens this weekend featuring plenty of music, food, exhibits and local artists plying their trade.
    The festivities get started at 10 a.m. and will continue until 5 p.m. at the Owen County Fairgrounds and is presented by the Owen County Arts Council.
    Organizer Patty Petzinger said there will be some changes designed to make the experience more enjoyable for the entire community.
    “This year, we will have roving musicians so there will be music everywhere,” Petzinger said.

  • Grand jury indicts driver after injury crash

    An Owen County man was recently indicted after being involved in an alleged DUI-related crash where two people were seriously injured.
    According to Kentucky State Police Post 5 Public Affairs Officer Bradley Arterburn, Thomas P. Colligan, 46, was traveling west on Hwy. 36 (Jonesville Road) when he crossed the center line and struck two vehicles.
    The accident took place around 4:38 p.m. April 21.

  • Bond for Owen County men accused in killing set at $500,000

    Two Owen County men were indicted by a Franklin County grand jury May 9 after allegedly strangling a Frankfort man to death and dumping his body on the side of Interstate 64 in Franklin County.
    Joshua Hammond, 31, and David Bruce II, 44, both of Owen County were indicted in Franklin Circuit Court on the charges of murder, assault, first-degree robbery and tampering with physical evidence.
    A third man from Grant County, James Simons, 35, was also indicted on the same charges.
