    Most people do what they can to avoid driving in icy conditions. When they are caught on slick roads, they typically don’t travel at high speeds in vehicles without brakes.

    One Owen County resident spent the winter of 2012 doing quite the opposite.

    Group steps in to help meet the needs

    The holidays may be over, but members of Monterey Baptist Church hope to keep the season of giving alive throughout the upcoming weeks.
    During a planning meeting this past fall, Marsha Derringer came up with the idea of the 12 Weeks of Christmas for Meeting the Needs. Meeting the Needs, a ministry that started in 2005, is a faith-based, non-profit organization. Volunteers from local churches help families who are in crisis with food, clothing and other emergency situations.

    Tobacco setting is focus of new barn

    As winter set in, Owen countians and those traveling through the area had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of summer labor and its history.
    The third Agricultural Heritage Trail Committee tobacco barn mural was installed Dec. 30 on a barn located on U.S. 127 North. The barn is owned by Johnny and Pat Craigmyle.

    Memory of lost friend will help others live

    Saying goodbye to a friend hasn’t been easy for many Owen County High Scool students, but they are determined to keep her memory alive in all school activites.
    The Owen County High School National Honor Society, in partnerhisp with the Kentucky Blood Center, will hold its second blood drive of the school year Monday, in memory of senior Rebekah Gaines who died Oct. 16.
