    Year after year, an unsuspecting citizen of Owen County arrives at the Owen County fairgrounds pavilion during far week for a special reason. Some think they’re here to see a friend win an award or to watch a family member in one of the pageants.

    Madison Gamble named Miss Owen County 2011

    As the annual Owen County 4-H Fair and Horse Show got into full swing Monday, another Miss Owen County was crowned.

    Madison Gamble, the 16-year-old daughter of Kelley and Teena Gamble, received the crown over 10 other contestants.

    Gamble was also named Miss Photogenic.

    Brittany Clark was the third runner-up, Danielle Hoop was second runner-up and Christina Johnson was first runner-up.

    Christina Ueltschi was named Miss Congeniality.

    Bonnolaray A. Craig, 1993, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, third-degree terroristic threatening, pleaded guilty, 120 days, to serve 7 days, conditionally discharged for the balance, credit any time served, 2 years and forfeit brass knuckles, no new offenses.

    Market on the move

    For six of its seven years in operation, the Owen County Farmers’ Market has been held on the courthouse lawn. But starting Friday, the market will have a new location.

    The Owen County Farm Bureau received an $82,419-grant for construction of a permanent structure for the market.

    School board makes middle-school renovation top priority

    Plans are moving ahead for the renovation of the old middle school, with third and fourth-grade students expected to move in by the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.

    The Owen County School Board held its regular monthly meeting Monday and after reviewing bids for the project chose RossTarrant – the new middle school’s architect – as architects for the project.

    The Owen County grand jury met June 14 and handed down the following indictments:

    Tiffany Carol Wheeler, 39, on the charges of theft of identity.

    According to the indictment on the charge of theft of identity, that she knowingly possessed or use Victoria L. Wheeler’s identifying information, namely her name, social security number and date of birth, with the intent to represent she was Victoria L. Wheeler for the purpose of obtaining benefits or property to which she would otherwise not be entitled, or avoiding detection.

    A new center of town

    Doreen McElroy wants a bench outside the new Monterey Community Center so people in downtown Monterey will have a place to sit down with neighbors and shoot the breeze.

    Her idea was one of several presented Thursday night when more than a dozen concerned Monterey residents gathered to discuss plans for the new center.

    “We had lots of very good ideas,” McElroy said. “It was a very good meeting and I think everyone was happy with the turnout.”
