    An Owen County Elementary School media specialist position will stay intact following Monday’s Owen County Board of Education meeting.

    The board discussed budget considerations for the 2012 fiscal year and voted to keep the media specialist position at the elementary school, despite a recommendation from Owen County Superintendent David Raleigh to eliminate the position.

    City, county brace for budget battles

    With the 2011-2012 budget looming over the Owen County Fiscal Court and Owenton City Council, cuts are expected to come from both entities.

    Owen Couty Judge-Executive Carolyn Keith said everything is being looked at when it comes to making cuts.

    Both of the county’s largest sources of revenue – the real estate tax and insurance-premium tax – are down.

    New Library Moves Closer to Reality

    Anticipation continues to grow after federal money was secured for construction of the new Owen County Public Library.

    The Community Facilities loan will come from the United States Department of Agriculture.

    According to its website, the USDA provides assistance to rural communities with a population of up to 20,000. Small communities receive a higher percentage of grants.

    Over a dozen cattle die in truck accident

    About 15 cattle died and 75 were rescued in a double-decker tractor-trailer accident on U.S. 127 North in Franklin County near the Peaks Mill Road intersection Wednesday night.

    The driver, David Evans, 48, of Burnside, sustained minor injuries but refused medical treatment, said Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton. “He had some minor scrapes and bruises,” Melton said.

    Owen gearing up for race visitors

    With the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race only months away, local officials are beginning to weigh in on the economic impact the race could have on Owen County.

    The announcement of the Sprint Cup race coming to Kentucky Speedway, located off the Sparta exit on I-71, was made last August.

    In preparation for the race, the Kentucky Speedway has increased its stadium seating from 66,000 to 105,000.
