    The Owen County grand jury met June 14 and handed down the following indictments:

    Tiffany Carol Wheeler, 39, on the charges of theft of identity.

    According to the indictment on the charge of theft of identity, that she knowingly possessed or use Victoria L. Wheeler’s identifying information, namely her name, social security number and date of birth, with the intent to represent she was Victoria L. Wheeler for the purpose of obtaining benefits or property to which she would otherwise not be entitled, or avoiding detection.

    School board makes middle-school renovation top priority

    Plans are moving ahead for the renovation of the old middle school, with third and fourth-grade students expected to move in by the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.

    The Owen County School Board held its regular monthly meeting Monday and after reviewing bids for the project chose RossTarrant – the new middle school’s architect – as architects for the project.

    A new center of town

    Doreen McElroy wants a bench outside the new Monterey Community Center so people in downtown Monterey will have a place to sit down with neighbors and shoot the breeze.

    Her idea was one of several presented Thursday night when more than a dozen concerned Monterey residents gathered to discuss plans for the new center.

    “We had lots of very good ideas,” McElroy said. “It was a very good meeting and I think everyone was happy with the turnout.”

    Following two successful fundraising events, two Maurice Bowling Middle School students are now hoping to bring two counties together to help secure funding for their dream skate park.

    After approaching the Sparta City Council in September 2010 with their idea to improve the skate park, Colton Matt and Logan Bailey requested the council match whatever money the two raised.

    At last…a champion

    It seemed like it was never going to happen. Instead, the final chapter of Danielle Hoop’s illustrious high school career had a very happy ending.

    In the last race she would ever run in high school, Hoop won the state championship in the 800-meter run. She won it in thrilling fashion as she edged out Ann Eason from Sayre School. The race was so close that officials had to get together to determine that Hoop won by just .005 seconds.
