  • Owen County girls golf team capture sixth-region tournament title

    For the past nine years, the Notre Dame Pandas have owned the Sixth Region Golf Tournament.
    On Sept. 25  in Kenton County, the Owen County Lady Rebels took possession of the trophy.
    The Lady Rebels had to wait out a few anxious moments in the clubhouse before learning they were had won the title.

  • Robots take over 4-H Science Day

    Hoping to turn 4-Hers into future scientists, the Owen County Extension Office will host an Eco-Bot Challenge Oct. 10.
    The event will take place as part of the fifth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day. The experiment will introduce youth to robotic engineering concepts as they program an autonomous robot to clean up a simulated environment spill.
    Owen County’s Cooperative Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development Staci Thrasher said in the past the focus has been on hyrdo-fuels and last year’s project centered around wind and energy.

  • Local and presidential races will dominate Nov. ballot

    The upcoming presidential election is sure to take center stage on the ballot next month, but Owen County Clerk Joan Kincaid said the federal election is likely to bring more voters to the polls to vote in local elections.
    Election Day is Nov. 6 and Kincaid said her office and the Owen County Board of Elections stays busy throughout the month of October preparing for the big day.

  • Fiscal court approves road work

    Owen countians will soon notice improvements to several roads after the Owen County Fiscal Court recently approved a resolution and agreement for resurfacing.
    The fiscal court held its second monthly meeting in September on Sept. 25 at the South Owen Fire Department, where the action was taken.
    The resurfacing will cost $350,000, but Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith said $100,000 of funding for the project will come from flex funds or extra funding from the state.

  • A walk in the garden

    Over the past year, an extensive educational garden has been developed at the Owen County Extension Office in Owenton. A tour has been scheduled to show details of the garden to those interested in landscaping. Lydia Boutwell, designer and landscaper, will be leading a walk through the  garden, discussing the attributes of all the plants in the landscape. The free tour will be held  Monday at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited.

  • Council corrects salary mistake

    After nearly two years and a change in the city administration, pay increases for the Owenton City Council and mayor have finally been properly approved.
    The council approved the mayor’s salary to be raised in 2010 from $8,500 a year to $12,000 a year. The council’s salaries were raised from $2,400 to $5,400 a year. at the same time.
    The raises took place under then-mayor David “Milkweed” Wotier by a motion and a second.

  • City working to spur new business, mayor says

    In his state of the city address Sept. 13, Owenton Mayor Doug West said the one thing the city desperately needs is more businesses.
    West gave his yearly address to members of the Owen County Chamber of Commerce during its monthly meeting.
    Since taking office in 2011, West said he and the Owenton City Council have worked hard to give new businesses an opportunity to make it in a tough economy.
    Earlier this year, the council approved for forgiving property taxes for new businesses in their first three years of operation.

  • Monterey residents prepare for the fair Oct. 6

    There may be a parade, cake walks, and a cornhole tournament, but for Colleen Thomas and many of the 20 other volunteers who are working hard to organize this year’s Monetery Fair and Homecoming, it’s all about the people.
    “We wanna keep that name homecoming in there,” Thomas said. “That’s really what it’s all about - getting to see all the people who have come back.”
    It’s that strong sense of community that Thomas and the other volunteers want to promote.
