  • Bethany school alum unite to remember

    The number of persons attending the Bethany school reunion continues to be smaller, but the enthusiasm remains upbeat.
    In spite of the 90-plus temperature and interstate repair, 18 friends met for lunch and fellowship July 23 at Noble’s Restaurant near Corinth. Some sat in traffic or drove the long way around to attend.
    A former student/teacher, the late Geraldine Hudson Green, had compiled a list of graduates/teachers of Bethany. Remembering faces to put with the names was interesting.

  • Kentucky Grazing Network coming to Owen County

    With one grazing network up and running, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture’s Master Grazer program is looking to create similar regional networks across the state.
    The Kentucky Grazing Network is for forage and ruminant producers. Participants share ideas and advice with other group members with the goal of improving everyone’s forage operation. The first network began earlier this summer in Northern Kentucky with a pasture walk at UK’s Eden Shale Farm in Owen County.

    One of Owen County’s most well-known musicians has fiddled his way to the August cover of one of Kentucky’s most prestigious magazines, “Kentucky Living.”  
    John Harrod has devoted a big part of his life to recording and documenting the state’s rich heritage of traditional talent and music, especially the fiddle.

  • The signpost up ahead reads ...Owen County

    With several events taking place in and around Owen County this summer, some Owen countians have come together to ensure that when a visitor enters the county, they know just where they are.
    Owen County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Judy Hetterman, along with others, have been designing signs to place at different entrances to the county.
    Three signs have been put up so far and each has a quilt square on the back, with a name to represent the area where the sign is placed.

  • Plans for center in Monterey progressing

    With a board of directors in place, the dream of a Monterey community center could soon become a reality.
    Doreen McElroy, a member of the community center’s management team, said the board of directors has begun meeting once a week. Following the board meeting, members of the management team then carry out what they discussed.
    The board of directors includes McElroy, Kit Isom, Josey Hazlett, Monterey Mayor Dennis Atha, Jerry Jones and Lee Searce.
