    After years of helping sick children and desperate families, a local woman and her family face tough times. Now, friends are turning out to offer them support.
    Sunday, a fundraiser will be held for Isaiah Columbia and his family. Isaiah has been the inspiration for his family to help others through the annual Walk for Awareness of CHDs that raised money and awareness of the struggle families and children go through when facing life-threatening cardiac problems.

  • Arson is suspected in F&N fire

    A fire that caused smoke damage throughout a local restaurant has been ruled as arson by investigators.
    The fire was in the F&N Family Restaurant, located at 945 Gratz Road, It was reported at 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
    Owen County Volunteer Firefighter Greg Estes, a commander on the scene, said the fire was mainly contained to the basement area and that there was no fire on the first floor or in the attic.
    Estes said every fire department in the county was on the scene, as well as police officers.

  • IRS revokes tax-exempt status for five groups

    The Internal Revenue Service has revoked the tax-exempt status of nearly 3,200 organizations in Kentucky including five from Owen County.
    According to a release from the IRS, the organizations had not filed IRS Form 990 or 990-EZ for each of the past three years.
    The Owen County organizations that lost their tax-exempt status are Owen County Summer League, the Truth Ministries of Owen County, the Andana Arboritum Inc., the Friends of Owen County Parks and Recreation and the South Owen County Volunteer Fire Department.

  • School board makes middle-school renovation a top priority

    Plans are moving ahead for the renovation of the old Maurice Bowling Middle School, with third- and fourth-grade students expected to move in by the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.
    The Owen County School Board held its regular monthly meeting Monday and after reviewing bids for the renovation project chose, Ross Tarrant — the new middle school’s architect — as architects for the project.
    The board also voted to move the renovation project from a “priority two” to a “priority one” on its facility plan.

  • Sheriff settles up with county

    The Owen County Fiscal Court recently approved the 2010 sheriff’s property tax settlement.
    The county collected $728,851.03; the school district collected $3,475,578.89; the library $750,014.55; the health district $338,736.04; extension services $295,050.16; soil conservation $86,838.29; and fire departments $227,122.
    The fiscal court met June 14, when the settlement was approved.

  • Police arrest pair for heroin possession

    A routine traffic stop led a Kentucky State Police trooper to make two drug-related arrests.
    Zachary Cope, 25, of Owenton, and Thomas J. Lucas Jr., 21, of Cincinnati, were arrested June 16 and both charged with first-degree possession of heroin.
    According to state police, Lucas was the driver of the vehicle that was pulled over around 11:36 p.m.
    After stopping the two, police obtained a consent to search, but it was unclear whether the heroin was found on their person or in the vehicle.

  • Owen man found dead in California

    Homicide detectives in San Bernardino, Calif., are investigating the death of an Owenton man after his body was found in the bed of a pickup truck engulfed in flames.
    According to a statement from the San Bernardino County coroner, at 6:52 a.m. Friday, the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to the report of a vehicle fire in an open field. After putting out the fire, firefighters found the body of Lafe Humble, 46, in the bed of the 2001 Dodge truck.

  • Crop planting deadlines near

    NAP and RMA Insurance participants are reminded of upcoming final planting dates for 2011 crops.
    Burley tobacco: June 20
    Corn for grain: June 15 for NAP participants
    Soybeans: June 15 for NAP participants
    For prevented planted crops, producers have until July 15 to report any prevented planted acreage, with the exception of small grains.

  • Gilson graduates from leadership institute

    Katherine Gilson, health educator with the Three Rivers District Health Department, is among 25 recent graduates of the Kentucky Public Health Leadership Institute, a year-long development program for practitioners in the field of public health.
    Gilson was awarded a certificate in public health leadership from the University of Kentucky College of Public Health in April.
    Funded by the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH), KPHLI is one of 35 leadership institutes located throughout the United States.
