  • Chapman named deputy city clerk

    For Owenton Mayor David “Milkweed” Wotier, the search has ended for a new deputy city clerk. Veronica Chapman was officially sworn in March 3.

    The deputy city clerk position became open after previous deputy Laura Aldridge was sworn in as city clerk.

    Wotier said there were at least 30 people who called or inquired about the job.

    Chapman, a 33-year-old Owen County native, said she felt like she would be well suited for the job because of her office experience.

  • Rebels win fourth district title

    To win the 31st District title, the Owen County Rebels would have to defeat a pair of rivals that have not been friendly as of late.

    Over the past couple of seasons, Gallatin County has had the upper hand against Owen County.

    Henry County has been tough on Owen County, beating the Rebels twice this year at the buzzer. The second time came back in January when the Wildcats sank a 40-footer at the horn to win the All “A” Classic.

    The Rebels’ climb to the top started Feb. 25 against Gallatin County.

  • Courthouse plans move forward

    The Owen County Justice Center is taking shape. The center is planned to reflect the design of the current courthouse.

    The plans presented at the project development board Monday are a starting point to fine-tune the layout.

    The plans feature three courtrooms, one each for district, circuit and family court. The family court, which takes up the entire second floor, will remain vacant until the budget is available for a family court judge.

  • NIE Week: News-Herald reaches into local classrooms

    Each week, 27 classrooms in Owen County receive copies of the News-Herald. Teachers from the primary school through the high school use the papers each week to correlate everything from articles to classifieds into their weekly lessons.

    This week is National Newspapers in Education week. Each teacher who receives copies of the News-Herald is sponsored by individuals or businesses.

    Sharlena Young, a fifth-grade teacher at Owen County Elementary School, uses the copies she receives for several different subjects, including government and economics.

  • Second overtime leads to second straight title for Lady Rebels

    “It was crazy.”

    Those were the thoughts of Rianna Gayheart after Owen County captured its second straight 31st District Championship Friday night.

    Owen County defeated Carroll County 38-30 in double overtime to capture the title.

    The Lady Rebels had a shot to win at the end of regulation when Lauren Lowe got off a shot at the buzzer from just across half court. The ball hit the back of the rim and then seemed to hang there until it fell off.

  • State removing debris from Owen roadways

    The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 Superintendent Colby Criswell announced maintenance activities in Owen County through Friday.

    Crews will continue working with FEMA contractors removing trees and brush on state routes in Owen County.  Motorists are urged to watch for flaggers, lane closures and equipment.

  • Chief warns of burning restrictions

    In the last few days, the fire departments in Owen County have responded to numerous grass fires.

    During this dry season, the fire departments of Owen County urge all residents of Owen County to take extra precautions concerning fires.

    Local officials ask the public not to burn any trash, garbage, paper products, household rubbish, grass, leaves, brush or trees. Never throw matches or cigarette butts out of a moving vehicle or when you go walking.

  • Academic team earns spot at state competition

    Twice a week, every week, month after month, Owen County High School students gathered to perfect their craft.

    But instead of art or music, they strove toward perfection in disciplines such as science, math and literature. The hard work paid off when members of the OCHS Academic Team won the regional competition and earned a place in state competition.

    The ice has melted, the snow has cleared and life is returning to normal after the biggest storm of the season. But when the storm moved on, it left a lot of damage behind.

  • After 38 years, Keith retires from area bank

    Michael Keith, who held the position of executive vice president and senior loan officer of the Owenton First Farmers Bank, has retired after 38 years of service.

    Keith began working at Farmers Bank in 1970 as a teller and held numerous positions throughout his 38 years.

    “I worked at about every capacity the bank had,” Keith said. “I was always going to school for it.”

    Keith is a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University.
