  • Adopt-a-Highway program highlights Spring Clean Week

    Adopt-a-highway groups are invited to join the Spring Clean Week, which goes through Saturday. Volunteers from across the state are uniting to show support for a cleaner environment. This is the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s first scheduled cleanup for 2009. Groups will also be given time during the month of April for cleaning needs.

  • Area ‘spring cleaning’ nets drug suspects

    Area law enforcement had their own version of spring cleaning Friday morning, rounding up 17 of 26 individuals indicted recently by a Carroll County grand jury for drug trafficking.

    Eleven individuals from Owen County were indicted on the drug charges; four were from Gallatin County; five were from Henry County; and one was from Frankfort.

  • When it comes to technology, nobody beats Bush

    Owen County teachers have been known to go above and beyond when it comes to giving their students top-notch lessons. Owen County High School business teacher, Kay Bush, is no exception.

    This summer, Bush will be awarded Kentucky Technology Teacher of the Year, presented by the Kentucky Society of Technology Education.

    Bush, who has been teaching in Owen County for 24 years, was nominated by fellow teacher Martha Hamilton.

    Chief Information Officer for Owen County Schools, Naomi Cornette, said Bush’s unique style of teaching led her to the award.

  • Owen County High School to host open house for parents

    Owen County High School invites students and parents to attend an open house between 5 and 6:30 p.m. March 30.

    Nominations are being taken through March 25 for a parent to serve on the high school’s Site-based Decision-making Council (SBDM). Please stop by the school’s office to fill out a nomination form for a parent-representative to serve on the council.

  • Tossing and turning at tourney

    Fans and participants filed into the Owen County High School gym Saturday afternoon. They came from Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. They came to watch a regional tournament. With it being March, one might expect it to be basketball. It was not.  

    It was the Owen County Judo Invitational.  

    More than 156 competitors took part in the competition. They ranged in age from four to senior adult.   The Owen County Judo Team is made up of 22 members in grades 1-12 and is coached by Doris Beverly.

  • Illnesses spark concern at sheriff’s office

    The Owen County Sheriff’s office has become the center of an investigation of problems that are believed to be causing multiple illnesses within the facility.

    Employees at the sheriff’s office first believed the cause of illness to be mold, mildew or asbestos.

    The Department of Labor tested the facility July 8 after receiving a complaint from the Division of Compliance. The facility was tested inside and out. According to a report from the Department of Labor, no unusual circumstances were found.

  • Leadership alumni look to future

    The Owen County Leadership Alumni met March 3 to discuss an agenda that consisted of cleaning up the downtown area and building a Web site that will inform those looking to come to Owen County on how to begin a successful small business.

    The Leadership Alumni consists of a group of about 70 people who have graduated from the four leadership classes. Leadership is an eight-month program that covers everything from agriculture to entrepreneurship.

  • Arrests make law enforcement more watchful

    After two people were arrested for possession of heroin in Owen County, Owenton Police Chief Terry Gentry is concerned the use of heroin may be on the rise in Owen County.

    The two arrests were made within days of each other.

    Eugene F. Wolpert was arrested on Feb. 28 and charged with first-degree possession of heroin.

    The second suspect, whose name is part of an ongoing investigation was arrested on March 2 and charged with first-degree possession of heroin.

    Gentry said two different kinds of heroin were found.

  • New Farmhouse Grill opens its doors

    When Trisha and Betty Richardson began their catering business last year, they never dreamed it would lead into opening their own restaurant, the Farmhouse Grill.

    Trisha and Betty Richardson are both natives of Owen County and took their first steps toward opening a restaurant when they began Your Menu Catering in 2008.

    When the location became available on Roland Avenue, the two jumped at the chance to start their own restaurant.

  • Thayer urges Republicans to stand up

    State Sen. Damon Thayer gave the Owen County Republican Party an update Thursday of what he has been working on during the 2009 legislative session, including the cigarette and packaged-liquor tax increase.

    Thayer, R-Georgetown, was recently re-elected as senator for the 17th district. He also serves as chairman for the Senate Committee on State and Local Government.

    Thayer thanked the Owen County Republican Party for supporting him during his campaign.
