  • Hetterman named Owen Countian of the Year

    When Judy Hetterman came to the pavilion at the Owen County Fairgrounds Wednesday night she thought she was going to see how a friend’s daughter did in the beauty pageant.

    Hetterman never dreamed that instead she would be presented with the Rotary Club’s Owen Countain of the Year award.

    Hetterman said her family was also unaware of the honor.

    “My family didn’t even know,” Hetterman said. “So everyone who knew kept a good secret.”

    Kendale Ashby, 1977, flagrant non-support, continued to Aug. 11.

    Matthew T. Brock, 1990, two counts of second-degree burglary, two counts of theft of a controlled substance, pleaded guilty, see order.

    Richard William Buchanan, 1969, motion for jail time credit, see order.

    Albert W. Fields, 1955, first-degree trafficking of a controlled substance, continued to July 17.

  • Magistrates reject cleaning plan, approve move

    The Owen County Fiscal Court met Monday and voted to temporarily move the Owen County Sheriff’s Office.

    At the March 10 fiscal court meeting, a representative from the sheriff’s department reported most of their staff had recently suffered “upper respiratory problems.” The  Kentucky Department of Labor previously inspected the entire building where the sheriff’s office is located and reported that no unusual circumstances were found.

  • Annual Owen County Fair Week continues

    Monday night, 12 young ladies stood before three out-of-town judges in hopes of becoming the 2009 Miss Owen County Fair.

    After a two-hour contest that included formal wear and swimsuit competitions, the judges’ decision became final, and Shadow Perry was crowned Miss Owen County Fair.

    Perry, who has been participating in Owen County pageants since she was a baby, said she feels at ease now that the pageant is over.

    “I feel awesome and relieved,” Perry said. “I’ve been doing this all my life and it feels great to win.”

  • State agency says no to West Perry project funding

    After months of consideration, debate and hope, a final word has been rendered on the Owenton City Council’s grant request for West Perry Street renovation.

    Mayor David “Milkweed” Wotier received a letter from the Department of Local Government that stated the renovation project will not be funded.

    The process began last August when Wotier announced that the City of Owenton would be applying for grant funds to spruce up one of Owenton’s streets. East and West Perry were the main targets for the program.

  • Kids help build stepping stones at library

    We were thrilled to see 130 parents and children attend our last summer reading session with Nelstone Stone Carving. With a little help from Penny and Al, we completed four new limestone stepping stones for our landscaping that were made by members of our community.

    They look great, and every time we see them, we’ll remember what a great day we had at the library with all of the program participants. The stones are currently on display at the front desk, so take a look as you check out your favorite books, movies or CDs.

  • Elk Creek wins awards at national competition

    Elk Creek Vineyard recently received two silver medals and a bronze medal in the Third Annual Mid-American Wine Competition held at the Des Moines Area Community College Ankeny, Iowa campus.

    “These wines were top notch,” Bob Foster, director of the Mid-American Wine Competition, said. “Consumers ought to track them down and taste them.”

  • Cornerstone Edging adds touch of beauty to local properties

    When Dave Williams began his business, Cornerstone Edging, in 2007 it was with the intent to save enough money to send his children to college. Two years later, he’s not only helping build his children’s  future, but he’s also teaching them that hard work can be rewarding.

    Cornerstone Edging offers a variety of landscape trim as well as patio walkways in many different patterns and colors.

    Williams said landscape trim is popular in Florida and that’s where he and his 16-year-old son, Trevor, were trained.

  • Servolution project helps community, young people

    Last week, 65 young people asked what they could do to help.

    Patti Clark, coordinator of the Owen County Teen Alcohol Prevention Project, said this is the third year local youth have volunteered their muscles and sweat to improve the lives of others through the Servolution Program

    In its first year, youth volunteers traveled to New Orleans to help the residents rebuild their city.
