  • Owenton gets grant for police gear

    The city of Owenton has been awarded $3,900 from the state Law Enforcement Protection Program to purchase body armor vests and duty weapons for its police department, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear recently announced.
    Under LEPP, administered by the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security, appropriate agencies can seek financial help for certain defensive items essential in the course of their duties.  

  • Tornado hits Owen County

    Three people were injured and structural damage occurred to multiple barns and two houses after an EF2 tornado touched down five miles north of Owenton Friday.
    According to preliminary reports from the National Weather Service, the initial touch down occurred near a farm south of Highway 227 at 4:25 p.m. where minor structural damage to a barn and house were observed.

  • Game rescheduled; severe weather expected in region

    Due to severe weather in central Kentucky this afternoon and going into this evening, tonight's Girls 8th Region semi-finals have been postponed.  The semi-finals have been rescheduled for Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rebels will play their semi-final game against Walton-Verona at 4 p.m. at Anderson County High School.

  • Owen County cow receives national honor

    Perkins Farms of Owenton has been recognized nationally by the American Angus Association for having a registered Angus cow included in the Association’s 2012 Pathfinder Report.
    Only 2,027 of the nearly 30,000 American Angus Association members are represented in this year’s report, according to Bill Bowman, chief operating officer and director of performance programs of the association.

  • In case of emergency: State to take part in tornado drill

    The 2012 Statewide Tornado Safety Drill is scheduled for Tuesday at approximately 10:07 a.m.
    Take a minute to conduct the drill and review your severe weather safety plan.
    The National Weather Service Offices serving Kentucky will use a tornado warning test messaage to trigger the drill.
    In the event of pending or inclement weather, the drill will be rescheduled.  

  • Starr’s new shop rising on Main Street

    Starr Caroline would once spend an entire day scouring through items in thrift and consignment stores, but a trip to Owenton recently turned one of her favorite hobbies into a business of her own.
    Caroline, the owner of Starr’s What Nots & What Have You, said opening a thrift store had been an idea of hers for some time, but she hadn’t exactly planned on Owenton.
    The former Grant County resident said she came to the Owen County Sheriff’s Office to pay taxes in 2011 when she spotted the open store at 101 West Seminary Street.

  • Ruling means Thayer stays in Owen County

    Damon Thayer will remain Owen County’s state senator after the Kentucky Supreme Court recently blocked the newly formed senate district map that reflected changes in the commonwealth’s population.
    One of the changes moved Owen County from Thayer’s 17th district and into former Gov. Julian Carroll’s seventh district which includes Anderson, Franklin, Woodford and parts of Fayette counties.

    The Owen County High School boys and girls basketball teams each captured their district crowns and will be moving on to the Eighth Region Tournament.
    And the post-season honors begin for the Rebels.
    Owen County was well represented on the All 8th Region Team which was announced last week.
