  • Lady Rebel golfers finish fifth at state All “A” tourney

    The Owen County girls’ golf team spent Saturday afternoon taking part in the All “A” State Golf Tournament at Gibson Bay in Richmond. When the day was over, the team had earned a fifth-place finish.

    The team score of 343 was just one shot out of fourth place and six strokes out of third.

    The entire team played well.

    Krista Power led the team with a round of 80. Jensen Wainscott fired an 86 while Lynsey Farrar posted an 88.  Shelby Power shot an 89 while Ally Minch totaled 91.

  • Remembering 9-11-2001

    A large crowd gathered Friday for the Sept. 11 memorial prayer on the Owen County Courthouse lawn. Owenton Mayor David “Milkweed” Wotier opened the memorial, followed by Owenton First Christian Church Pastor Bill Watson. Owenton First Baptist Church Pastor Bradley Banks led the gathering in prayer. Watson said he felt the large turnout was indicative of how Sept. 11 affected not only the lives of those who lost family members, but everyone throughout the country. “I think everyone was affected by it,” Watson said. “It reminds people of their freedoms.

  • Three Rivers hopes to have flu vaccine by mid-October

    As residents across the county gear up for flu season, the Three Rivers District Health Department is preparing for H1N1, more commonly known as swine flu.

    Although no cases of H1N1 have been reported in Owen County, many people are looking for a vaccination.

    Three Rivers Public Health District Director Georiga Heise said although the Centers for Disease Control have not yet released a vaccination Three Rivers is expecting one to be made available by mid-October.

  • Breaking NewsSchool officials believe student has swine flu

    The Owen County School District is issuing a letter today, indicating a student at Maurice Bowling Middle School may have contracted the H1N1, commonly known as swine flu.

    Owen County School Superintendent Mark Cleveland said Wednesday the middle-school student has the symptoms of the virus, but no formal test results have been received.

    Cleveland said the Center for Disease Control is backed up with many other possible swine flu tests and he has been advised to treat the illness as an incident of swine flu.

  • Sweet Owen vendors cut to single day

    For one day out of each year, the Owen County Courthouse square is transformed into a community-gathering place, filled with street vendors, local bands and lots of fun for all.

    The ninth annual Sweet Owen Day festival will be held Sept. 19.

    The event will kick off with the Owenton Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast at 7 a.m.

    A 5-K run/walk will take place, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

  • Sept. 11 event to be held in Owen County

    Members of the community will unite Friday to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

    A memorial prayer will take place on the courthouse lawn at noon and the public is invited to attend. Pastors from various churches around the county will be in attendance to lead the prayer.

    Peggie Tisch, who is organizing this year’s event ,said this will be the third year it has been held.

  • Dairy Queen reign ends with restaurant closure

    The signs outside invited friends and customers to come inside for one final cup of coffee at the Dairy Queen that has been a part of the lives of countless Owen County residents for years.

    Inside, employees who had made such an impact on the lives of owners Doug and Letitia Lubbe said their goodbyes amid handshakes and hugs.

    Tuesday, the doors closed on the local landmark.

  • Library board approves tax rate increase

    With an eye toward building a new facility to better serve the public, the Owen County Public Library Board approved a tax increase.

    The board voted to take a 4-percent increase. This year’s real-estate rate will be 10.8, up from last year’s rate of 9.5. The personal property and motor vehicle rates will remain the same as last year.

    Owen County Public Library Director Jennifer Nippert said an architectural firm, Brandstetter Carroll Inc., has been selected to assist the library board in site selection and design of a new facility.
