  • Doctor hopes to find HIV treatment in proposed Owen laboratory

    A medical research facility could be in New Liberty’s future.

    Dr. Ray C. Perkins and his daughter, Sarah Leonard, have worked for 10 years to develop effective and economical methods in the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

    Perkins said these methods will also apply to many forms of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and other infectious diseases.

    If the company, known as New Liberty Proteomics, can gain enough support, Perkins is looking to establish a biomedical center in Owen County.

  • Ghost hunter coming to library

    The Owen County Public Library will be hosting ghost hunter Patti Starr Friday from 6:30 until 8 p.m. 

    After Starr speaks, there will be a ghost hunt in the building from 8 to 9 p.m.

    Starr is a world renowned paranormal investigator who owns the Ghost Chasers International organization founded in 1996 based in Lexington.  She is also owner of the Ghost Hunter Shop located at 835 Porter Place in Lexington.

    Starr is the tour guide for the popular Bardstown Ghost Trek which she started in 1997 in Bardstown.

  • Owenton property owners will see slight tax change

    The Owenton City Council voted to raise its real property tax rates to .326 from last year’s .316 during its Oct. 1 meeting.

    The .326 tax rate means a property owner will pay .326 on each $100 worth of real property at its assessed cash value.

    Owenton City Clerk and Treasurer Laura Aldridge said a property owner whose property was worth $100,000 would pay $326 in real property taxes.

    The personal property rate will be .469 as opposed to last year’s rate of .3338. The vehicle rate will be .2829.

  • Owen schools escaping flu bug bite for now

    While some school districts across the state of Kentucky have shut down due to H1N1 virus and other illnesses, Owen County students remain healthy.

    Owen County School District Director of Pupil Personnel Charlotte Elkins said the attendance rate for the year remains high.

    “We’ve been in good shape so far,” Elkins said. “The rate for the year so far for the district is 95 percent. That’s from the beginning of the year up to last Friday.”

    Elkins said there have been no confirmed cases of H1N1 in the district.

  • Community mourning local leader

    Owen County lost one of its most recognizable citizens – Dr. Charles Calvin “C.C.” Arnold died Monday.

    Dr. Arnold, who was born in Squiresville, served as a dentist in Owen County for more than 50 years. He also served as mayor of Owenton from 1969 to 1973, president of the Owen County Parent Teachers Association and chairman of the Owen County Hospital Board.

    Janetta Keith, who went to work for Arnold as a dental assistant in 1977, said Dr. Arnold was a devoted dentist.

  • Former resident accused of sexual abuse in Owen

    A former Owen County resident has been charged with sexually abuse a child under 12 years old.

    According to the Kentucky State Police, Robert Allen Stiver, 55, of  Louisville, was arrested Sept. 25 on 10 counts of first-degree sexual abuse, a class C felony.

     The Owen County case opened Sept. 3, when the family of the victim contacted KSP.

     The events for which Stiver is charged allegedly took place between 1994 and 1998.

  • Downtown sound

    Friday night, the five young members of the Downtown County Band will have the opportunity to share the stage with one of the biggest known acts in bluegrass music – Ricky Skaggs.

    The local group, which consists of Wes Petzinger, Dave Hawkins, Sam McWilliams, John Atha and Keith  Clifton, will be the opening act for Skaggs as he takes the stage during the outdoor concert series at Elk Creek Winery.

     The Downtown County Band has shared the stage with other big names. It once opened for bluegrass musician Sam Bush.

  • Fiscal court finds a little extra for budget

    The Owen County annual budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year has a little extra money heading its way.

    During a special meeting of the fiscal court Sept. 22, the court voted to approve the first reading of an ordinance amending the annual budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

    Owen County Judge-Executive Carolyn Keith said the county received a bond fee from Kentucky American Water for $24,990.

    Keith requested the bond fee from Kentucky American Water to cover the cost of administrating a bond sale.

  • Firefighter dies after responding to call

    An Owen County volunteer firefighter died after responding to a call late Saturday night.

    Although the pumper truck he was driving crashed, the accident is not believed to be the cause of death for the 60-year-old Terry Sharon, a firefighter with the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department.
