  • Owen County TAPP receives YES Group of the Year, Youth Leadership in School Safety awards

    An Owen County youth organization has once again received state recognition for its efforts in reducing underage drinking in Owen County.

    Owen County Teen Alcohol Prevention Project received the Youth Empowerment Systems Group of the Year award on Sept. 16 in Shepherdsville and the Steve Kimberling Youth Leadership in School Safety Award presented by the Kentucky School Board Association on Oct. 12. The group also received the Robert Straus Award Group of the Year award in July.

  • Courtroom may help preserve historical information

    The Owen County Courthouse may someday help the public get back in touch with their roots.

    During a recent meeting of the Owen County Fiscal Court, members of The Owen County Historical Society approached the magistrates about making historical information more available to the public.

    Margaret Murphy, a founding member of the historical society, said she would like to see a history research center in Owen County.

  • Illnesses taking toll on schools

    As attendance in the Owen County School district continues to drop due to various illnesses, Superintendent Mark Cleveland is looking for ways to keep the doors open.

    Cleveland said the attendance rate stayed above 90 percent last week, but has dropped drastically this week with only 87 percent attendance Monday and 85 percent Tuesday.

    Cleveland said although there have been several cases of the H1N1 virus in the district, other illnesses are more prominent.

  • Officials still looking for causes of gas leak causes

    A main-line gas leak near the intersection of Perry Street and Cherry Alley caused local emergency workers to evacuate everyone within a 500-foot radius Thursday.

    At 4:11 p.m., the leak was reported by Owenton officials to Carrollton Utilities, which responded immediately.

    Carrollton Utilities General Manager Bill Osborne said utility crews closed the valve serving the section of line near the intersection and made the necessary repairs.

  • Crash shuts down highway for four hours

    A man driving a tri-axle dump truck filled with asphalt on Ky. Hwy. 355 wrecked Monday morning.

    Kentucky State Police Trooper Seth Willis said the Kentucky State Police were notified of the accident at 10 a.m.

    “Wesley H. Simpson of Stanford, Ky. was traveling South on Hwy. 355 when the vehicle began to leave the right side of the road,” Willis said. “He apparently cut the wheel hard to the left, which caused the truck to flip, spilling asphalt all over the road.”

  • Library receives federal grant

    The Owen County Public Library is the recipient of an $8,055 equipment grant. Funding for the project is made possible by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, and it is administered by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA).

    Equipment grants provide funding necessary to replace, upgrade or purchase new equipment in order to improve patron access to information and resources or to enhance library services. KDLA received 23 applications in this category, awarding 10 of them for a total of $72,537.

  • Firm presents new plans for buildings

    Progress is being made on the new concession stand and restrooms for the Owen County High School football field.

    The Owen County School Board met Thursday with representatives from Ross Tarrant Architects for a progress meeting concerning construction on the new middle school.

    Owen County School Board Superintendent Mark Cleveland said the original plan for the new concession stand and bathrooms had originally been to duplicate the current structure along with a new press box.

  • Road repairs begin

    Resurfacing on several Owen County roads is expected to begin soon.

    The Owen County Fiscal Court held a special meeting Thursday to open bids for the resurfacing of four roads.

    Mago Construction Company out of Bardstown won the bid over Ohio Valley Construction company. Mago’s bid was $171,301.

    On Sept. 22, the court voted to approve a resolution and agreement between Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Rural and Municipal Aid and the Owen County Fiscal Court for the resurfacing.

  • Fire destroys church

    A fire has claimed the building where dozens came to worship each Sunday evening.

    The EPOCH Fellowship church, located at 1370 Hwy. 22 E., caught fire Monday morning. Apparently a coffee pot was left on throughout the night, Owenton Fire Chief David Lilly said.

    The Owenton Fire Department received word of the fire at approximately 7:15 a.m.

    Lilly said the fire began at the front-left corner of the church.

    “The floor was caved in where the coffee pot was,” Lilly said. “The inside was a total loss.”
