  • Bittersweet Celebration

    The word “family” was one of the touchstones for this year’s graduation service at Owen County High School
    During their address, Owen County High School Class of 2012 Valedictorian Brittany Sloma and Salutatorian Miranda Owens talked about the tragedies that touched the class, including the deaths of Rebekah Gaines and Miranda Goodhew.
    Sloma and Owens said the terrible events brought the class together like a family and each classmate will have a special bond that will forever connect them.

  • Murder suspects enter not-guilty pleas in Franklin

    Two Owen County men and a third from Grant County accused of killing a Frankfort man May 5 entered not guilty pleas in Franklin Circuit Court May 17.
    Joshua Hammond, 31, and David Bruce II, 44, both of Owen County and James Simons, 35, of Grant County, are being charged with murder, assault, first-degree robbery and tampering with physical evidence.
    According to Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton, the victim, Charles Monroe, 30, had met the three men at the Frankfort Walmart on Leonardwood Drive to allegedly purchase prescription pain pills.

  • Fatal crash leads to charges

    One Owenton man is dead and another has multiple charges pending against him after an alleged DUI-related crash May 16.
    Kentucky State Police Post 5 Public Affairs Officer Bradley Arterburn said KSP troopers responded to the crash at 6:59 a.m. The incident occurred several
    hours earlier but was not called in until another driver saw the vehicle, police said.
    The driver, Lamonte Richardson, 55, was traveling east on Frank Clark Road when he failed to negotiate a curve, police said in a statement.
    The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

  • Owenton cops nab suspects in burglary

    Two Owenton men were arrested Thursday after allegedly burglarizing
    Smoker Friendly on North Main Street in Owenton.
    According to a press release from the Owenton Police Department, Brandon S. Zipperle, 19, and Charles Dodson II, 22, were arrested May 19, the same day the incident took place.
    According to records obtained from the Owen County Circuit Clerk’s Office, Zipperle admitted to breaking into Smoker Friendly with the intent to steal cigarettes.

    Friday,  the Owen County 4-H Cloverbud group planted the barrels around  the square as their service project.  I would like to thank Daniel Bustle, Owen County High School Ag.  teacher/ FFA sponsor, for helping me choose and providing the flowers used in the barrels.

  • Owenton man faces charges following fatal Wednesday crash

  • Democratic Party selects local leaders

    The Owen County Democratic Party Executive Committee has elected the following officers and delegates for the state convention: Stuart Bowling, chairman; Chris Spurgeon, vice-chairman; Rob Stafford, secretary; and Frank Downing, treasurer.
    Delegates are Carolyn Keith, Frank Downing and Courtney Bourne.

  • Beverly represents Owen at Rotary Club Speech Contest

    This year’s theme for the 2012 Rotary Speech Contest was “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.”  Contestants learned about Rotary and its mission.  Winners at the local level were OCHS students Robert Beverly (first place with a  $300 prize), Rachel Dauwe (second place with $200 prize) and James Thompson (third prize with $100 prize)

  • Applications being taken for clothing construction program

    Thanks to shows like “Project Runway,” and “Fashion Star,” sewing is enjoying newfound popularity.  If you have a basic knowledge of garment construction, want to perfect your craft and help others learn to sew, you may find the master volunteer in clothing construction program enjoyable and fulfilling.  Recruitment for the next class of Master Clothing Volunteers is ongoing through the end of June.
