  • Owen Co. exposure

    Owen countians will get a taste of fame when the spring edition of “Back Home in Kentucky” magazine reaches the mailboxes of thousands across the state.

    “Back Home in Kentucky,” now based in Shelbyville, began in 1977 when two brothers came up with the idea of putting together a positive-news magazine featuring all things Kentucky.

    The magazine was bought in 2000 by its current owners, Bill Matthews of Shelbyville and May Penniston of New Castle.

  • History ... hot off the press

    The long-anticipated Owen County Family History Book was released Thursday by the Owen County Historical Society. The hardcover book, over 288 pages with hundreds of photos never before seen by the public, covers the history of many prominent Owen County families, churches, clubs and schools.

    Owen County Historical Society President Jeannie Baker said she can wait to start turning the pages.

    “We’ve waited a long time for this,” Baker said. “I am going to curl up somewhere warm and read it straight through.”

  • Fiscal court workshops get off to rocky start

    Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith was pleased with the turnout of the first Owen County Fiscal Court workshop, but said she was disheartened after a sometimes contentious exchange between some magistrates and former judge-executive Billy O’Banion.

    Keith said the workshop, which took place Jan. 26, began with discussions on a wide variety of issues.

  • Davis on hand for New Horizons' innovation

    For the residents of Owen County, receiving reliable health care locally just keeps getting easier.

    Last summer, New Horizons Health Systems opened a new state-of-the-art doctor’s clinic on Hwy. 127, just north of Owenton. Last week, the health care group received a $250,000 earmark appropriation in the federal budget for the purchase of a new magnetic resonance imaging machine.

  • Morning after workshop, long-time magistrate withdraws from ballot

    After filing to run for second district magistrate, incumbent Bobby Gaines withdrew his candidacy Jan. 27.

    Gaines, whose current term as magistrate will end a 17-year run, said he had no specific reason for withdrawing.

    “I just decided that I had all I needed of it,” Gaines said. “There’s a lot of problems right now and I just didn’t want to be in the middle of it anymore.”

    Gaines said he probably wouldn’t have filed for candidacy had he not been encouraged to do so.

  • Carter won’t seek new term

    Owen County Attorney Charles Carter will soon wrap up of his 25-year public service career, but he will continue to run his private practice, Carter Law Firm.

    Carter said he opened his private practice March 1, 1960.

    “I will continue to operate my private practice,” Carter said. “My son, Charles Jr., is my associate and I plan to be more involved with it than I was.”

    Carter said the highlight of his career as county attorney has been doing what he thought was right for society.

  • Owen emergency management advises everyone to be prepared

    The news of an earthquake in Haiti and the aftermath brought home the continuing possible threat of earthquakes in Kentucky. While it is fresh on everyone’s mind, Owen County Emergency Management Director Rick Morgan would like to encourage everyone to be prepared.

    Surviving an earthquake and reducing its health impact requires preparation, planning, and practice.

  • Challenger files against KeithDeadline for May primary election passes

    As the deadline to file for the May primary elections approached Tuesday afternoon, it appears many of Owen County’s sitting officials will not be challenged for re-election during the May primary election.

    Tuesday afternoon, a challenger filed against incumbent Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith when Horace  "Doug" West filed just before the deadline.

    Candidates had until the Owen County Clerk’s office closed Tuesday to file papers.

  • Alleged street light shooters appear in court

    After allegedly shooting out a total of 50 street lights, six of which were private lights, three Owen County men may be looking at costly fines.

    The trio allegedly shot out the street lights during the early morning hours of Jan. 14.

    Ethan Bush, Thomas J. Lucas and Andy C. Minch appeared in Owen County District Court Jan. 15 and each pled not guilty to their charges.

    Bush was charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, first-degree complicity criminal mischief, and first-degree complicity wanton endangerment.

  • The state of the county

    Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith has some concerns with the current state of Owen County, but she is also looking forward to building a brighter future for Owen County while preserving its rural heritage.

    Keith said her biggest concern at this time is the county’s financial state.
