  • Owen emergency management advises everyone to be prepared

    The news of an earthquake in Haiti and the aftermath brought home the continuing possible threat of earthquakes in Kentucky. While it is fresh on everyone’s mind, Owen County Emergency Management Director Rick Morgan would like to encourage everyone to be prepared.

  • Challenger files against KeithDeadline for May primary election passes

    As the deadline to file for the May primary elections approached Tuesday afternoon, it appears many of Owen County’s sitting officials will not be challenged for re-election during the May primary election.

    Tuesday afternoon, a challenger filed against incumbent Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith when Horace  "Doug" West filed just before the deadline.

    Candidates had until the Owen County Clerk’s office closed Tuesday to file papers.

  • Alleged street light shooters appear in court

    After allegedly shooting out a total of 50 street lights, six of which were private lights, three Owen County men may be looking at costly fines.

    The trio allegedly shot out the street lights during the early morning hours of Jan. 14.

    Ethan Bush, Thomas J. Lucas and Andy C. Minch appeared in Owen County District Court Jan. 15 and each pled not guilty to their charges.

    Bush was charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, first-degree complicity criminal mischief, and first-degree complicity wanton endangerment.

    Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith has some concerns with the current state of Owen County, but she is also looking forward to building a brighter future for Owen County while preserving its rural heritage.

  • Primary election begins to take shape

    As the 2010 Owen County primary election filing deadline looms closer, some new names have surfaced along with familiar faces.

    Charles E. Carter, who has served as Owen County Attorney for over two decades, has said that he will not be filing for the position.

    “I’m not planning to run,” Carter said. “This will finish my 25th year and I’m not planning to file again.”

    The deadline to file is 4 p.m. Tuesday.

  • Vandalism, thefts end senior center rental policy

    Senior citizens can rest easier knowing that the Owen County Senior Center will no longer be rented out.

    Owen County Senior Center Director Lisa McBurney approached the Owen County Fiscal Court at its Jan. 12 meeting requesting that the rental fee be raised or rental of the center be completely stopped.

    McBurney told the court items were being stolen from the center or vandalized nearly every time it was rented.

    “Things are being stolen and broken and our ability to lock and secure things is really limited,” McBurney said.

  • Trio charged with shooting out 32 street lights

    Three young men were arrested early Thursday after they allegedly shot out more than 30 street lights.

    Owen County Sheriff Zemer Hammond said the majority of the lights shot out were on Georgetown Road.

    “So far we know of 32 street lights that were shot out and four private lights,” Hammond said. “There were some in Hesler, some on Swope Road and Slippery Rock Road.”

    Police requested the names of the suspects be omitted, citing an ongoing investigation.

  • Carolyn Keith back on the ballot

    Incumbent Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith has announced she will be a candidate in the May Democratic primary for the highest elective office in the county.

    Keith was appointed to the office of judge executive Feb. 12, 2009, by Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear following the resignation of Billy O’Banion, who quit the office as part of a plea agreement in connection with theft, theft of services and official misconduct charges.

    Keith, a native of Owen County, grew up in the New Columbus community.

  • Tea Party turnout

    Several Owen County citizens turned out Jan. 15 at the Owen County Library for a meeting concerning a Tea Party movement within the county.

    Emily Shelton and Nancy Bearclaw, members of the Northern Kentucky Tea Party, spoke to the group.

    Shelton said the Tea Party movement is growing across the United States.

    Shelton said the movement has no rules, but there are core values.

  • Fiscal court goes to two sessions a month

    When the fiscal court met Jan. 12, it unanimously approved Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith’s recommendation to hold two fiscal court meetings each month.

    “I just feel that it’s necessary if we want to run things smoothly,” Keith said. “There’s a lot of business that needs to be taken care of and we’re not always able to do so in our regularly scheduled meetings.”
