  • Help young mothers with community baby shower

    The Owen County Early Childhood Council will be hosting a community baby shower for all expectant mothers and mothers of children up to 18 months of age on May 1 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Owen County Public Library
    Several different community agencies will be present with information for mothers and mothers to be along with door prizes for those that attend.  There also will be light refreshments served.
    The door prizes will be given out every half hour and a speaker from Northern Kentucky Community Action will be making a presentation on shaken baby syndrome.

  • Owen Co. softball earns first victory

    The Owen County High School softball team picked up win number one last week.
    The Lady Rebels traveled to New Castle April 15 to take on Henry County High School.
    Owen County’s last victory of 2013 came there when the Lady Rebels defeated Eminence in the first round of the 31st District Tournament.
    Their first victory of 2014 would come in New Castle this season as Owen County knocked off Henry County 3-2. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak to begin the season.

  • Owen girl wins grant to help feed hungry kids

    Anna Riddle, a third-grade student from Owenton has been awarded a Disney Friends for Change Youth Grant through Youth Service America.
    The grant will support Riddle in leading a community service project for Global Youth Service Day.
    Service activities will take place on Global Youth Service Days - the largest volunteering and service event in the world.
    Riddle is using her grant to purchase food for Owen County Schools’ Power Pack Program – a program that sends food home with hungry children on the weekends, when school meals are not available.

  • Wife of suspect in murder case indicted

    One of the three men allegedly involved in the 2012 murder of a Franklin County man, along with his wife, are charged with tampering with physical evidence.
    According to the State-Journal, Joshua Hammond, 33 and his wife, Louanna Hammond, were charged after testimony from Travis Wright, a witness in the James Simons trial last month.
    Joshua Hammond, Simons, 37 and David Bruce II, 46, allegedly planned to rob Charles Monroe after buying prescription drugs from him May 5, 2012 in the Walmart parking lot on Leonardwood Drive in Frankfort.

  • City council moves ahead with pay hike for next mayor

    An ordinance that would raise the mayor’s salary for the City of Owenton was given a first reading Monday.
    If approved, the ordinance will raise the mayor’s salary from $12,000 to $18,000 per year and would allot for $300 per month in health and life benefits.
    The raise would not become effective until Jan. 1, 2015, following the Owenton mayoral race in November.

  • Owen grand jury hands down four indictments

    The Owen County grand jury handed down four indictments April 8.
    • Autumn L. Darrell, 21, on the charges of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.
