  • Cheerleaders look to return to tournament

    As the Owen County High School Cheerleading Squad gets ready to compete this year, the team has unveiled two special projects that will help them make their way back to the state tournament.
    Coach Jenna Gray said the group would be hosting a special elementary cheerleading camp Sept. 29 through Oct. 3, which will feature a special performance at the end of the week.
    This year, the squad has launched a new fund-raising project. The group is partnering to open at team spirit shop on-line featuring Owen County High School Rebel wear.

  • Jones family holds reunion

    The James reunion was held Aug. 31 at General Butler State Park in Carrollton.
    Despite impending weather, our attendance was the highest we’ve had in several years. There were 106 people in attendance. Following a wonderful day of fellowship and delicious food, everyone departed looking forward to next year at the same time.

  • Owen Co. Adult Learning Center to offer free GED practice tests for limited time

    The See for Free program can  help students pass the GED test
    From Sept. 22 to Oct. 3, the Owen County Adult Learning Center is giving away free GED practice tests to all students who come into the center. Students who take GED Ready can see for free:
    • If they’re ready to pass the GED test
    • The skills they need to work on to pass the test
    • A personalized study plan detailing pages and chapters to study in their favorite study books

  • Voters approve alcohol by the drink in Owenton

    History was made in the City of Owenton Tuesday after a move to allow the sale of alcohol at some restaurants within the city limits of Owenton passed by 66 votes in a special election Tuesday.  
    The vote took place in the Owenton Incorporated precinct, where the owners of Casa Mexican Restaurant said the successful election will help their business stay in Owen County.
    Mario Chavez, a part owner of Casa Mexican Restaurant, said he had a good feeling that the measure would pass.

  • Owen Co. sheriff seizes about $800k in marijuana plants

    The Owen County Sheriff’s Department made its second largest marijuana bust in 14 years Monday with help from the Kentucky National Guard.
    Owen County Sheriff Zemer Hammond said the bust took place at 610 Roberts Lane, where Lawrence Qubeck allegedly had 407 marijuana plants growing.
    “Several years ago we found (700 plants) at one plot,” Hammond said. “Most of the time it’s just 10 or 15 plants, but there was two different plots on this place with 407 plants total.”

  • A time of reflection: Community gathers in prayer to remember 9-11

    Vowing to never forget the victims, sacrifices and heroes of Sept. 11, 2001, a group gathered in the old courtroom inside the Owen County Courthouse to solemnly remember the 13th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on American soil.
    David ‘Milkweed’ Wotier, pastor of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, opened the remembrance with a prayer to honor the victims of the attack, their families and those who rushed to the scene to lend a hand.

  • Owen County grand jury returns five indictments

    An Owen County grand jury has handed down five indictments from the August session.
    • David A. Smith Jr., 34, on the charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree assault, operating a motor vehicle under the influence, failure of seat belt, no or expired Kentucky registration receipt and speeding.

  • Music festival comes to Owen this weekend

    The inaugural Kentucky Mile Music Festival will kick off this weekend in Owen County.
    The event, which will be held at 845 Handy Lane in Owenton, is designed to help expose new music to the public while raising money for a childrens’ charity.
    “We are looking for this to be an amazing opportunity for the people of Owen County and all the surrounding counties to come be apart of,” organizer Josh Handy said.”We’ve been hard at work and are expecting a great turn out for an amazing cause.”
