    Most came from Virginia and the Carolinas, but long before they crossed the Appalachian Mountains into Kentucky, many of these hearty pioneers immigrated from England, Scotland, Ireland and Germany.
    Their possessions were limited, but their wealth lay in their heritage, which was embraced in stories, legends, folklore and sayings that had been passed down for generations.
    Like all areas of Kentucky, Owen County had its own unique colloquialisms, yet many old-time sayings were familiar from one end of the state to the other.

  • At the library - Aug. 26-Sept. 1

    September is Library Card Sign-up Month. Remember that a library card is the most important school supply of all. Snoopy is honorary chair for Library Card Sign-up Month 2015. Come see if you can find him at the library.
    This week’s suggestion for a mini-adventure in the library:  Adventure #6 – Chose a random CD, listen to it all the way through, write a critique. Got a kid and an hour? You have time for an adventure.

    Owen County Republicans to meet
    The Owen County Republican Party will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday. Those wishing to dine may arrive by 6:30 p.m. Results of the Aug. 22 vote of the Republican State Central Committee as to whether there will be a presidential caucus for Republicans and what that entails for our county party organization will be discussed. Some yard signs will be available.

    This week’s suggestion for a mini-adventure in the library: Adventure #5 – Have everyone in the family find a poem in the poetry section, read it out loud and copy it into your journal. Got a kid and an hour? You have time for an adventure.

    Movie to be held on courthouse lawn
    Movie night on the courthouse lawn will be held at dark, Aug. 29. The movie will be shown rain or shine. Don’t forget to bring a chair or blanket. Epoch Fellowship will provide free popcorn.

  • Local public transit receives statewide Up and Coming award

    Owen County’s Public Transit program recently received the statewide Up and Coming Public Transit Award.
    The award was presented Aug. 12 to Owen County Judge-Executive Casey Ellis during a Kentucky Public Transit conference in Lexington.

  • Consultant hired as program administrator

    With the absence of a full-time emergency medical service director, Owen County Fiscal Court voted to hire a community program administrator at its Aug. 11 meeting.
    Dan Brenyo, who served as a consultant to the fiscal court earlier this year, was hired for the position by a 3-1 vote from the court.
    Magistrate Teresa Davis voted against the hiring.

  • Man arrested after alleged armed robbery

    The suspect involved in the alleged armed robbery of a Snappy Tomato Pizza delivery driver was arrested by Kentucky State Police Aug. 12.
    The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m., June 10, when KSP Post 5 Campbellsburg received the call that a delivery driver was being robbed at gunpoint.
    The delivery was to be made at the church at Eagle Creek Campground.
    According to a KSP detective, there were about three males wearing dark-colored clothing in a gray passenger car.
