  • Wet-dry petition making rounds

    A petition for a wet/dry vote in Owen County recently began circulating, which Owen County Clerk Joan Kincaid said could lead to a costly special election.
The petition asks if Owen countians would be in favor of the sale of alcoholic beverages in Owen County.
    To get the petition on the ballot, 901 Owen County registered voters will have to sign the petition.
The amount of signatures needed represents 25 percent of the number of votes cast in the last general election.
Kincaid said 3,604 Owen countians voted in the 2010 general election.

  • Flood of answers to farmers’ drought questions

    Many Owen County farmers have been concerned over the fall and winter about how their pastures will come back after last summer’s drought. What are the chances that the grass and clover will return this spring? How can I evaluate what I have now? What will it cost to reseed and renovate this spring, and will it pay? What weed problems can we expect, and how should they be dealt with? What, if anything, could have been done differently last year to help protect pastures from drought?

  • Matching money

    Keith Miller, agent for Modern Woodmen of America, presents a check to Mike Marston and Delores Dempsey in the amount of $2,480 as a result of a matching-fund project, with proceeds being raised by sale of Owen County Rebel Wear for the Owen County Youth Soccer League. Modern Woodmen of America is a 128-year old fraternal insurance society providing many benefits to both families and community.

  • All dressed up: Prom store to celebrate grand opening

    Cathy Jansen left Owen County three years ago to open a prom dress store in Tulsa, Okla., and now she is bringing one back to Owen County. After being in Tulsa and talking to girls in Owen County and the surrounding area, Jansen saw a need for the same type of store here. “Girls in this area don’t have a place to go to purchase  prom gowns from the top prom designers. The Palace will meet this need,” Jansen said.

    Eligible livestock producers, with 2010 NAP coverage have until Jan. 30, to sign-up for the Livestock Forage Disaster Program.
    The  LFP provides compensation to eligible livestock producers that have suffered grazing losses for covered livestock on land that is native or improved pastureland planted specifically for grazing.
    The grazing losses must be due to a qualifying drought condition during the normal grazing period for the county.  
    Owen County has met qualifications for D-3 drought conditions.
