  • Owen County Library trustee attains state certification

    Richard Matthews, a member of the Owen County Public Library Board of Trustees, has completed the Kentucky Public Library Trustee Certification Program.
    The trustee certification program is the first of its kind in the state and is available to all Kentucky public library trustees through the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. It was created to provide trustees with tools to help fulfill their responsibilities to the libraries and their communities.

  • Owen Co. students accept merit-based scholarships to EKU

    Hundreds of incoming freshmen and transfer students have accepted merit-based scholarships to attend Eastern Kentucky University.
    Local recipients include:
    • Owen County High School graduate Courtney Carol Waldrop, of Owenton, has accepted a Governor’s Scholar Regents Scholarship
    • Megan Hayley DeCandia, of Owenton, has accepted a Regents Scholarship

  • Jacobs joins American Angus Association

    Kyle Jacobs of Owenton is a new member of the American Angus Association.
    The American Angus Association, with more than 25,000 active adult and junior members, is the largest beef breed association in the world. Its computerized records include detailed information on more than 17 million registered Angus.
    The Association records ancestral information, keeps production records on individual animals, and develops industry-leading selection tools for its members.

  • Sweet Owen Arts in the Park: Local arts council announces deadline for contest application

    The Owen County Arts Council will be holding an art contest as part of the fifth-annual Sweet Owen Arts in the Park organized by the council.
    This is a juried event and only artists displaying  their own original work are eligible.  Exhibitors must be present throughout the entire show. Artists leaving early will not be invited back.
    The  emphasis of the show is original arts and crafts by residents of Owen and surrounding counties.

  • Community baby shower to help teen moms

    Owen County Family Resource Center and Youth Services Center will host a community baby shower for teen parents and newly expectant parents on April 16. The event includes informational presentations that help expectant parents prepare for the arrival of their new baby. Presentations will include brain development; the importance of early education; breastfeeding; books and reading; healthy relationships; parenting styles; nutrition; dental care; and safety in the home

    Each week, there will be a new round of voting and for each round you vote, you will be entered to win a prize.

  • Courting perfection

    How does a team improve upon perfection? That is the question the Owen County High School football team is asking as they get ready to kickoff the 2012 season Friday night.
    The Rebels are coming off their first ever perfect regular season in 2011. They would finish 11-1 overall after losing to the eventual 2A State Champion Holy Cross Indians in the second round of the playoffs. The year also included a district championship as they swept through Gallatin County, Walton-Verona, Trimble County and Carroll County.
    Repeating, as Owen County will find out is never easy.

  • Students following in strong footsteps

    On April 15, the Owen County Primary Leadership Class held its second-annual luncheon.  
    The seven young leaders greeted guests from all the businesses that they had visited over the year.  
    Peoples Bank, First Farmers Bank, Owen Electric, Owen Dental Center, New Horizons Family Practice, the Owen County Extension Office, and staff members from the Owen County Courthouse participated in the event.
