  • Stephen Randall Ayres

    Stephen Randall Ayres, 59, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Aug. 21, 2008. Born June 19, 1949, in Frankfort, he was the son of the late Gerald Thomas and Norma Marie Eads Ayres. He was a former butcher and a long time social member of the VFW Post 1042 in Elmwood Place, Ohio. He was also a 1968 graduate of Owen County High School and attended Millersburg Military Institute.

  • Joseph Wayne Beatty

    Joseph Wayne Beatty, 63, of Louisville, died Oct. 21, 2008, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville following a long illness.

    Born in Louisville, he graduated from Millersburg Military Institute and Western Kentucky University. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon men’s Fraternity, the NRA, Tenure and Kentucky Public Retirees. He was a former principal at Monterey School in Owen County.

  • Betty Jean Thomas Johnson

    Betty Jean Thomas Johnson, 76, died Oct. 27, 2008.

    Born Oct. 23, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Dowell and Gertrude Thomas of Holbrook. She is survived by four sons, Jackie Leonard Johnson of Corinth, Robert Allan and Randal Thomas Johnson both of Owenton, and Gary Gene Johnson of Georgetown; two brothers, Charles Ross Thomas of Wilmore and Albert Clyde Thomas of Williamstown; a sister, Katherine Lucille Harris of Jonesville; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

  • Loith Gifford Harlow

    Loith Gifford Harlow, 87, of Owenton, passed away Oct. 26, 2008, at Georgetown Community Hospital.

    Born March 12, 1921, in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late E.M and Ida Lanham Gifford and the widow of Lyle C. Harlow. Mrs. Harlow was a retired hairdresser and a member of Owen County Homemakers and Owenton First Baptist Church.

  • Lou Alma Gaines

    Lou Alma Gaines, 88, of Owenton, passed away Oct. 24, 2008, at Harborside Healthcare Facility.

    Born Oct. 22, 1920, in Owen County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Myrtie Meecham Jones and was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Gaines; her son, Barton Gaines; her daughter, Brenda Kemper; and her grandson, Jeff Taylor.

    Mrs. Gaines is survived by her daughter Louise Taylor of Owenton; seven grandchildren, Marcella Wright, Felechia Wainscott, Lucinda Janes, Darrell Kemper, Heather Gatewood, Tina Shryock and Glendane Taylor; and 12 great-grandchildren.

    Judith Anne Jansen-Matlack, 63, of Corinth, died August 25, 2008, at her home following an extended illness.

    Born May 14, 1945, in Hayward, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Richard Jansen. Judith was an accountant for Toyota Tsusho and was a Jehovah’s Witness.

  • Dr. Henry Lamar Adams

    Dr. Henry Lamar Adams, 90, died at his home Aug. 22, 2008. He was born Nov. 26, 1917, to Henry Albert Adams and Frances Jirels Adams. Henry graduated valedictorian from high school in Owenton in 1934. He completed his B.A. at the University of Kentucky in 1938. He married his college sweetheart, Frances Elois Sadler, on Aug. 24, 1941. Their only child, Catherine Lamar Adams, was born on Feb. 23, 1943.

  • Virginia Kersey Johnson

    Virginia Kersey Johnson, 94, died October 19, 2008, at New Horizons Medical Center. Born February 14, 1914, she was the only child of the late James and Maude Kersey of Worthville, and the widow of Lawrence Johnson.

    Mrs. Johnson was a teacher and a member of First Baptist Church. She enjoyed working in her yard and flowers, traveling and she did exquisite needlework, which she passed on to a lot of her friends.

    She is survived by her good friends, Ann Cook, Vicki and Danny Gortney, Kara Kistner and a host of cousins.

  • Hugh Scott Keith

    Hugh Scott Keith, 83, died October 20, 2008, in Owen County. Son of the late John Irvin and Roxie Lee Poland Keith, he served in the Navy during World War II, retired from Owen Electric and was a member of First Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 128.

    He is survived by his wife, Annette Smith Keith; a son, Mike (Kathy) Keith of Owenton; a daughter, Sandy (Steve) Small of Owenton; a brother, Marvin Keith of Owenton; a sister, Ruth Furnish of Frankfort; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

  • Shirlene French

    Shirlene French, 72, died October 13, 2008, at her home in Warsaw. She was the widow of former Circuit Clerk and Gallatin County Sheriff, Charles “Chick” French. Together they owned and operated Moon River Restaurant and the Brown Hotel in the 1960s. She was later employed by Square D Corporation, from which she retired. She was a member of Paint Lick Baptist Church, and she is known for her kindness and generosity.
