  • Charles L. Mertz

    Charles L. Mertz, 65, of Owenton, formerly of New Castle, died June 4, 2009, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

    He was preceded in death by parents, Fred and Maudie (Frazier) Mertz; two grandchildren, Leslie Nicole and Tonya Renea Mertz; and a sister, Mary Lee Mertz.

  • Roy C. McCormick

    Roy C. McCormick, 76, of Owen County, died May 30, 2009, at Owenton Manor. Roy was the son of the late Ernest and Anna Bramblett McCormick. He was the husband of Sarah Florence Renfro McCormick. Roy was a farmer and a member of the Elk Lick Baptist Church. He was also a veteran.

  • Ruby Franklin Osborne

    Ruby Franklin Osborne, 72, of Owenton, died June 2, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

    Born Oct. 18, 1936, in Grant County, she was the daughter of the late James and Romania Dunlap Cook and was preceded in death by her sister, Patsy.  Mrs. Osborne was a nurse’s aide for many years at the Owen County Memorial Hospital and Three Rivers Home Health Agency.  She was also a member of Williamstown Methodist Church.  

  • Rondal B. Osborne

    Rondal B. Osborne, 91, of Independence, died May 30, 2009, at Villa Spring Care Center in Erlanger.

    He was the owner/operator of Osborne’s Barber Shop in Covington for over 67 years, a member and former deacon of Ashland Avenue Baptist, former deacon, trustee, comptroller, and Sunday School Superintendent at Southside Baptist Church in Covington, and a Navy Veteran of WWII. 

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Osborne, and a daughter, Sherry Compton. 

  • Eunice Katherine Rice

    Eunice Katherine Rice, 88, of Frankfort, died May 27, 2009, at her residence following a long illness. A native of Owen County, she retired from the Cabinet for Human Resources. She was a former teacher in the Owen County Schools and a Sunday school teacher and member of Thornhill Baptist Church.

    She is survived by a son, James David Rice of Sellersburg, Ind.; three sisters, Louise Jones and Anna Margaret Middleton of Clermont, Fla., and Irene Jones of Charlestown, Ind.; four grandchildren, Susan May, Jeffrey Rice, Tracy Schuld, and Nikki Rattliff; and nine great-grandchildren.

  • Elinor Mae Sampson

    Elinor Mae Sampson, 76, of Warsaw, died May 23, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence.

    Born in Carroll County on March 7, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Henry O’Donovan and Freida Fortner. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

    She was a retired employee of the Gallatain County Board of Education and a member of  Warsaw Christian Church.

  • Oscar Perkins Jr.

    Oscar Perkins Jr., 78, of Owenton, died May 20, 2009, at his home.

    He was a carpenter, farmer and a member of Owenton First Baptist Church.

    He is survived by his wife, Alice Thornton Perkins; two sons, Danny Perkins of Owenton, and Jim Perkins and wife Angela of Owenton; three daughters, Sherri Young, Teresa Perkins, and Lisa Perkins, all of Owenton; and a brother, Donald Perkins of Edgewood.

    Services were held May 22, 2009, at McDonald & New Funeral Home. Bural was at I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

  • Hollie B. Clifton

    Hollie B. Clifton, 82, of Jonesville, died May 20, 2009.

    Born Jan. 23, 1927, in the Brush Creek community of Owen County, he was the son of the late Garnet B. and Ella Harrington Clifton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict; a retired shipping operator for U.S Steel Co. in Blue Ash, Ohio; and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Jonesville.

  • Samuel Eugene Robinson

    Samuel Eugene Robinson

    Samuel Eugene Robinson, 87, passed away, May 9, 2009, at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. He was a retired coach, superintendent and had 30 plus years as a school administrator. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, VFW 4075th, and many charitable and civic organizations.

    A native of Owen County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Ava Belle Mefford Robinson.

  • Michael Atha

    Harold Michael “Mike” Atha, 59, died April 26, 2009.

    Born Oct. 10, 1949, in Franklin County, Mr. Atha was a graduate of Franklin County High School and Kentucky State University. He was an employee of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, a member of the National Angus Association, Frankfort-Franklin County Farmers Association, Distillers Union, and St. Johns Baptist Church. During his youth, he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 281.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Ranzel Atha; and a brother, Charles D. Atha.
