Owen County Soil Conservation District Administrative Secretary Kelly Burford releases a monarch butterfly back to nature Thursday. Burford cared for the butterfly from the time it was an egg till time to be released and releases hundreds each summer.
Meet the ‘Butterfly Lady’

Recycled lunch meat containers fill the desks and windowsills of the Owen County Soil Conservation Office located on West Perry Street.  Inside those containers, a metamorphosis is taking place.
What started out as a few caterpillars six years ago has turned into an ever growing project to rescue and release monarch butterflies, a species that many researchers believe to be headed for extinction.
