  • I think there were many prayers lifted to Heaven Friday night, concerning weather. Saturday dawned cold but cleared and it was a beautiful fall day for the Monterey Homecoming Fair.
I went down early to help set up the cemetery committee’s booth. Teresa Davis had already gotten the booth pretty much finished except for a couple of chairs and the easel to put the pictures on and the photos themselves. I had mounted them on cardboard so people could see them better.

  • When a pen meets history, the past bursts into life. This explosion is created by an author who draws from a multitude of sources. I would like to thank all those whose knowledge of Owen County history and its families make possible my weekly column in the News-Herald. Their contributions serve to keep our heritage alive, and history is recorded once again.

  • It is now 32 degrees on my thermometer this morning. We had frost Sunday morning too. It looks like I can quit popping the allergy pills very soon. I did get the live plants into the garage Saturday evening. I’ve learned when they start predicting low temps for surrounding counties, it’s going to frost on the Branch. Our flowers are long gone before anybody else’s. That’s why I switched to artificial flowers to decorate for fall. They are bright and decorative long after the cold of November sets in.

  • Cheyenne and Rae Gina Beatty of Owenton and Mike Kelley of Frankfort wish to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Mary Katelyn Kelley to Jeffrey Brian Stewart, son of David and Tabitha Perry of Owenton.
The wedding will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at the home of Cheyenne and Rae Gina Beatty. A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony.

  • Emma Helene and Avery Michaela Walker, the twin daughters of Chad and Jennifer, were born June 26, 2102.
Avery weight 6 pounds 9 ounces and Emma weighed 5 pounds three ounces.

  • We on the Branch have been enjoying beautiful, picture perfect weather this week.
Fay and Bruce have been busy going up and down the road cutting hay for Wanda and myself, making the fields look as good as the cut grass on our lawns.

  • Dust whirled about as buggies and farm wagons made their way along Owenton streets in the early 1900s. The occasion was County Court Day and the enthused Owen County crowd bought, bartered, and bargained for the best deals of the day.
Most looked forward to this event which was held on the fourth Monday of the month. Many who attended were farmers who came to town, transacted their business  and returned home in time to milk.

  • We had bridge on Tuesday at the Smith House. I was the designated hostess this week. As I was going in with my very large beach bag of stuff for the bridge game, I saw Jackie Allnutt just in front of me. I hadn’t seen her since the Owenton High School reunion. We stood blocking the door and talked till she found her friends and went to sit down.
