Each year, the various chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsor a DAR Good Citizen contest for high-school seniors.

The senior selected as “DAR Good Citizen” must have demonstrated the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

With the assistance of the Owen County High School, the John Guill DAR Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is proud to announce Derek S. Ellis has been chosen to receive the Chapter’s 2010 DAR Good Citizen Award.

The Fifth Annual Walk for Awareness of CHDs will be held Saturday,from noon until 7 p.m. at the Owenton First Baptist Church Family Life Center.

Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by the following groups:

Opening by Jerry Smith – Adult CHDer

Noon – 1 p.m.: Bode McKinley

1 - 1:45 p.m.: David Pitt

1:45 – 2 p.m.: Capitol City Dance Studio

2-3 p.m.:  First Baptist Church of Carrollton Praise Band

3-3:30 p.m.: CHD survivors and Angels Recognition Walk/Jan Eldridge and Heather Marsh

Licensed drivers in Owen County showed their support of organ donation by donating an extra dollar and placing their name on the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry when renewing their drivers licenses in 2009.

According to the Kentucky Circuit Court Clerks’ Trust For Life, Owen County Circuit Court Clerk, Leigh New’s office collected the donated $1 from 61 percent of those obtaining their drivers license last year; and 28.6 percent of drivers also placed their name on the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry.

After suffering a congenital heart defect, 12-year-old Nick Smith’s life is finally going back to normal and has taught his family the significance of being close to one another.

Smith, who played football for Maurice Bowling Middle School, didn’t know what was causing him to feel bad, until one day at football practice in the fall of 2009 when he collapsed on the field.

Smith’s mom, Debbie Smith, said Nick had told his coach that he wasn’t feeling well.
