For many people today, the smell of fresh-made bread and ice cream is either a long-held memory or an unknown experience.

But in the next few weeks, a family new to Owen County will be helping renew or create those experiences for the community.

Wilmer Stoltzfus, 39, hopes to open the doors to Countryside Deli and Bakery on U.S. 127, about four miles south of Owenton, in August. Construction on the building began in May.

The store will feature fresh bread, ice cream, baking supplies, homemade jams and jellies and plenty of pickles.

\Despite dark skies and the threat of rain, fans came out strong for Elk Creek Winery’s popular summer concert series kick-off.

The series began Friday with a show by a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Beach Boys.

The group took the audience on a musical journey, performing hits that spanned their entire career, including “409,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Good Vibrations” and “Kokomo.”

General Manager of Elk Creek Winery Kristine Walker said about 1,400 attended the show.

The summer concert series held each year at Elk Creek Winery will kick off  May 28 with a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Beach Boys.

The concert series, which takes place at Elk Creek Winery’s outdoor amphitheater, has been bringing top musical acts to Owen County for the past three years, including country artist Sara Evans, legendary Motown group The Temptations, and blues guitarist Buddy Guy.

Owner of the Elk Creek Winery, Curtis Sigretto, said finding acts for the concert series is no easy task.

Owen County Schools is pleased to announce Tracy McMillian has been chosen as the volunteer of the month for March.

McMillian was nominated for this award by Mary Inman, a third-grade teacher at Owen County Elementary.
