  • Elk Creek brings home medals from competition

    Elk Creek Vineyard received three bronze medals in the fourth annual Mid-American Wine Competition held at the Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny, Iowa.

    “These wines were top notch,” Bob Foster, director of the Mid-American Wine Competition, said. “Consumers ought to track them down and enjoy them.”

  • Monterey News

    First of all, I have a correction to make. In last week’s column I wrote that Colleen was going to skip the month of July for having another Monterey Fair Board Meeting and was going to have it Aug. 19. That was incorrect; the new date for the next fair meeting is Aug. 21 at 11. Sorry for the confusion this may have caused anyone. Hope to see more there than last time.

  • A new place to rest

    There’s a lot that can be done with five acres of land: produce crops, raise livestock or build homes. You could even build a new cemetery, which is exactly what Bruce Clark decided to do with his vacant land.

    Clark said the cemetery, located on Wright Road, is his way of giving back to the community.

    “I thought about putting some cattle out here,” said Clark. “But I decided I’d like to do something for the community.”

    Clark said the cemetery, which has been in the works for a little over a year, could open soon.

  • DeCandia represents Owen on Capitol Hill

    Brittany DeCandia of Owenton was among the 86 high school students from across Kentucky who participated in the 39th annual Kentucky Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour held June 11-18, 2010, in Washington, DC. Selected on the basis of academic achievement, community involvement, and her participation in the Frankfort Youth Tour, DeCandia was sponsored by Owen Electric Cooperative.

  • Coming Home

    Descendants of Frank and Sallie Morton Ford gathered recently for a family reunion in Owenton. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ford were the builders of the Ford home on South Main Street in 1870. Current occupant is Peggy Sue Ford, widow of Dr. Charles R. Ford.

    The families of two of the Ford’s five children were represented: their daughter Sallie Ford Broadus (1860-1949), and their son, Col. Robert Carrick Ford (1862-1941).

  • Summer program brings hundreds to library

    There are many days that make me grateful to be a librarian in Owen County, but there are some days that just blow me away. Last Wednesday, June 23, was one of those days.

    Let me give you a little bit of context here. Summer reading programming always creates excitement and makes our library a busy place, and this summer is no exception. 

    Over 330 children and adults are signed up to participate in our programs, and since the beginning of June, over 70 new library cards have been issued.

  • Three Rivers sponsors fun runs to promote fitness

    Three Rivers District Health Department/Owen County Health Center hosted the second in a series of four 5K fun run/walk events May 1 at the Owen County High School. 

    Thirty participants braved the strong rains and cool temperatures for the opportunity to run and walk. Everyone gathered at the winner’s circle where trophies were given to the first-, second-, and third-place racers and medals were presented to the top three males and females in seven different age groups.

  • New program for summer being offered to girls

    Kindergarten to fifth-grade girls in Owen County are invited to take part in a free program sponsored by the Girl Scouts of America and the Owen County Public Library.

    The 2010 Girl Scout “It’s a Girl’s Life” program will be offered during four consecutive Tuesdays (July 6-27) from 9:30-11 a.m. at the library.

    Girls will have the opportunity to learn about Girl Scouting, make crafts, play games and hopefully make some new friends.
